Assistant Conservator (Textiles)

The Heritage Conservation Centre (HCC), an institution under the NHB, plays a leading role in heritage conservation and collection management in Singapore. It is the centralised repository and conservation facility for the management and preservation of Singapore's National Collection under the custody of NHB. HCC supports more than 10 museums, heritage and visual arts institutions under the umbrella of NHB. HCC Conservation Services department is constituted by a team of over 30 conservators and comprises 5 specialisations: objects conservation, paintings conservation, paper conservation, textiles conservation and conservation science. HCC is looking for candidates for the position of Assistant Conservator (Textiles) to contribute to the organisation's mission to manage, care for and facilitate access to the National Collection by performing effective and quality preservation and conservation care supported by research of the NC. Promoting awareness of heritage preservation and conservation to the public and special interest groups is also an important part of the job.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting and undertaking examination, assessment, documentation, and conservation treatments for artworks and artefacts from the National Collection
  • Support preventive conservation projects/activities directly, or indirectly relating to collections in storage, on loan, on display, and including framing and mounting work
  • Assist in liaison and planning work for exhibition and gallery development projects
  • Participate in HCC's and NHB's outreach and education activities
  • Assist in administrative duties where assigned.
Requirements:
  • Background in Conservation or Science, Arts and Humanities (Arts or History). Candidates without relevant experience may apply
  • Sensitivity to history and aesthetic values required
  • Familiarity and experience with regional and local art history, as well as modern and contemporary art will be advantageous
  • Handling and treatment of artefacts will be advantageous, but not necessary
  • Able to carry out practical work with high degree of manual dexterity and aesthetic sensitivity, experience in sewing and handling textiles is advantageous.
  • Applicant should be meticulous, patient, neat, tidy and organized and is able to pick up new skills quickly
  • Possess proficient verbal and written communication skills coupled with high emotional quotient
  • Takes initiative, good time management skills and has the ability to handle stress and multi-task,
  • Has a positive attitude and is a cooperative team player who can work independently
  • Strong interest and curiosity in the area of heritage and the arts especially in the area of textiles.
