Job Purpose

The Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) is a policy research think-tank in the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore. Its centre for social indicators research, the IPS Social Lab, is seeking to hire an Associate Director (Strategic Planning) who will provide leadership in the areas of long-term organisational planning, stakeholder engagement, communications and process documentation. This individual will report to the Head of the IPS Social Lab and will work closely with the Senior Associate Director (Operations) to achieve the Social Lab\'s mission and objectives.

The Associate Director (Strategic Planning) will play a key role in IPS\' efforts to support informed decision-making and policy formulation through high quality data collection and analysis, as well as offering good training programmes which seek to enhance skills and increase competence in managing intergroup differences. This job will suit public officers and those with a research background who are interested in gaining key insights into various policy issues, networking with thought leaders in the policy and business space, and communicating research data and ideas to inform national conversations on our future.


  • Conducting strategic planning for the Social Lab, including forecasting, negotiating and overseeing research project contracts, developing survey panel engagement strategies, and the qualitative research arm of the lab
  • Building good working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, and reporting project updates and outcomes to them in a timely fashion
  • Packaging research data and findings for public consumption through direct communication channels and social media
  • Working closely with the operation team to ensure process documentation and review
  • Working with the IPS Programme on Race, Religion and Intergroup Cohesion to ensure maximum reach of the programme
  • Assisting in training programmes that the lab runs in qualitative and quantitative methodology
Qualifications
  • Have at least a Masters degree preferably in a social science discipline with an emphasis on research
  • At least five to eight years of working experience, preferably in the public service, Institutes of Higher Learning or consumer research firms
  • Have a strong command of both written and spoken English and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Possess leadership, analytical and management skills, sound judgement and the ability to work under pressure
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in and understanding of social and policy issues in Singapore
  • Preferably have an interest in the development of training programmes which relate to social cohesion issues
