Job Description

Summary Salary: Competitive Team: Design and Development Location: Singapore - Technology Centre

About us

Dyson is a global technology enterprise. We solve the problems others choose to ignore, with surprising new inventions that defy convention and simply work better. We\'re driven by progress and thrive on the challenge of relentless improvement. We\'re growing fast and our ambition is huge - more categories, more locations and more people.

We push the boundaries of what others have defined as possible. Our engineering approach starts with different thinking. Then we continuously refine our ideas - unwilling to compromise and driven by an obsession for finding a better way. Today we employ more than 5,800 people around the world in software engineering, mechanical engineering and science-related roles.

Our Energy Storage Development (ESD) team are responsible for new battery technology that will deliver significantly better performance than conventional battery cells.

About the role

We are looking for a highly motivated and detail-oriented Associate/Principal Engineer - Data Science to drive and shape the data science capabilities within the wider Energy Storage organization.

As an Associate/Principal Engineer within ESD, you are recognized as a senior technical leader with considerable experience spanning material/mechanical/manufacturing engineering, coupled with a deep appreciation of data science. You will apply your engineering experience towards understanding the challenges of designing and manufacturing lithium-ion cell, define the data science problem we need to solve, and lead the development and implementation of suitable data science products.

While you can be hands-on in creating these data science products, a larger part of your work will be guiding the effort of others. You will be a key leader in a larger cross-functional team that is responsible to deliver a smart factory platform that operationalizes data science and supplies class-leading intelligence. The team encompasses both data scientists and data engineers, and you would typically play the part of a product manager.

  • You will be a data science champion, advocating to all levels, proliferating data science practices across the team, and embedding data science products in everyday engineering.
  • You will be the bridge between engineering and data science teams, understanding what models work best in what situations, and helping engineers figure out the right AI/ML solutions. You will work within a cross-functional team to deliver those AI/ML products.
  • You will collaborate and offer consultancy with both upstream (Energy Storage Research) and downstream (Energy Storage Operations) data science teams, being a sparring partner to
  • You will build up an intimate knowledge of the battery design and manufacturing process, spending time with engineers in the lab or on the production floor to better understand the challenges.
  • You will work with ESD engineers to integrate data science models with traditional engineering models, to speed up the process and to generate new insights.
  • You will lead the response to complex business challenges beyond what business intelligence teams are capable of today. You will apply logical thinking and statistical learning techniques to obtain robust results the business can rely on for critical decisions.
  • Cutting edge approaches are key to keeping pace with Dyson\'s innovative culture: you will be a thought leader in your area, propagating insights around industry trends and emerging technologies and methodologies throughout the organisation.
About you

Working at the forefront of technology is tough so standards and expectations are high. On top of the technical know-how and passion to learn more, you\'ll need to be inquisitive by nature, enthusiastic about technology, creative and tenacious in your approach to problem solving. You will be comfortable picking up new tools and skills as you strive to create something new.

Preferably you will have considerable engineering experience (eg. mechanical, material, manufacturing, product development) coupled with a strong and demonstrable real-world experience of delivering tangible business value through data science products.

You\'ll also need to be/have:
  • Excellent business acumen - you are someone who can quickly absorb a new domain, and recognise what problems are most valuable for our stakeholders.
  • A scientific and rigorous approach to solving practical problems using logical thinking.
  • Strong core knowledge of applied machine learning supplemented with a robust statistical background.
  • Finds the possibility of working closely in a squad with data scientists, data architects, cloud enablers, data engineers and DevOps practitioners exciting.
  • Ideally you will have at least a Master of Science qualification in a relevant field (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering), or similar hands-on experience.
  • Has a passion to understand Dyson, to frame its problems, and to deliver tactical solutions in short timeframes when required.
  • Thrives on exercising your communication skills, with the ability to explain complex analytical concepts to business audiences of varying data literacy levels.
Essential Key Qualifications
  • A degree in engineering with a strong Data Science element.
  • Goof understanding of statistical modelling. Working experience of using advanced machine learning techniques to solve business challenges.
  • Good Python skills with a focus on statistical and ML packages, e.g., Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, XGBoost, NumPy, SciPy.
  • Proven track-record of leading data science product development and deployment, and delivering tangible business value through data science products.
  • Exposure to software engineering best practices, including version control (Git, Mercurial), unit testing and working with Agile delivery principles.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Knowledge of how to build enterprise data science products in cloud environments.
  • Docker and Kubernetes experience.
  • 8 years of programming experience in Python, R, C++, or JavaScript.
  • 5 years of programming experience in machine learning framework, TensorFlow, PyTorch or Keras.
Benefits

Professional growth, leadership development and new opportunities abound, driven by regular reviews and dynamic workshops. And with a vibrant culture, the latest devices and a relaxed dress code reflecting our engineering spirit, it\'s an exciting team environment geared to fuelling and realising ambition. #LI-DYSON
