The Challenges

An audiologist is a healthcare professional who works with those who have ear problems including hearing and balance difficulties. The job scopes involve the evaluation of hearing loss and related disorders of the auditory system, as well as providing audiological rehabilitation to adults.

An audiologist selects, fits and dispenses amplification systems, such as hearing aids and other assistive listening devices, such as FM system.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct screening and diagnostic audiological assessments (includes medical history taking, otoscopy, pure tone audiometry and tympanometry) for the adult populations in the community.
• Assist patient in upwards referral post audiological assessments, e.g. ENT referral or/and aural toilet.
• Provide Hearing Aid Services/Management in Community Audiology Clinic
• Hearing aid evaluation: Conduct hearing aid trials, counsel and provide recommendation of appropriate hearing aids.
• Hearing aid fitting: Patients are fitted with chosen hearing aid, counsel on device usage, warranty, proper care and general maintenance.
• Hearing aid follow-up: Verify and validate hearing aid setting. Conduct outcome measures to determine the benefit of hearing aid.
• Hearing aid troubleshooting: Troubleshooting hearing aids and take appropriate action.
• Provide financial counseling to patient and family members pertaining to hearing aid cost, and assist patient in application of financial assistance for hearing devices.
• Liaison with relevant stakeholders/other professionals pertaining to case management or clinical related matters.

The Requirements

• Minimal requirement of a Bachelor in Audiology (Honors) degree. A Masters in Audiology is preferred.
• CCC-A/CCP/CAC/registered/certified audiologist (in other countries or with the Society of Audiology Professionals Singapore) is preferred.
• Just graduate. Clinical experience not required but a minimum of 200 direct clinical hours as part of the curriculum is required before graduation.
• Clinical experience of 1-2 years is preferred.
• Relevant experience such as clinical support from hearing aid companies is preferred.
