OverviewAn Audiologist is a healthcare professional who works with those who have ear problems including hearing and balance difficulties. The job scope involves the evaluation of hearing loss and related disorders of the auditory system, as well as providing audiological rehabilitation to adults.An audiologist selects, fits, and dispenses amplification systems, such as hearing aids, tinnitus maskers, cochlear implants, bone-anchored hearing aids, middle-ear implant, and other assistive listening devices, such as FM system.Job ResponsibilitiesPrimary Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic audiological assessments
  • Use of 2 patient identifiers
  • Obtain case history from patients and caregivers
  • Competent in otoscopy, Pure Tone Audiometry, Immitance test (Tympanometry and Acoustic Reflex), Eustachian tube function test, Speech test and Otoacoustic Emission test
  • Accurate recording and uploading of audiometric test results, and charging on Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system
  • Interpret audiometric results for patients, caregivers and health care professionals involved
  • To provide counseling services to patients, parents and all concerned
  • To provide Hearing Aid Services/Management
  • To conduct hearing aid evaluations where patients are given information regarding hearing aids in general, how it helps, and types, features, costs and benefits.
  • To assist patients in the selection and recommendation of appropriate hearing aids and actual trial on patients.
  • To perform hearing aid fitting where patients are fitted with chosen hearing aid, help them get familiarize with the device, warranty, proper care and general maintenance.
  • To monitor the progress of the patient by regular hearing aid follow-ups. Verify and fine-tune hearing aid setting/fitting by REM, interview and functional gain testing to determine the benefit after hearing aid fitting. Conducts outcome measures to determine the benefit hearing aid fitting.
  • To perform impression takings for ear moulds and swim plugs.
  • Assist in Hearing Aid Services
  • Troubleshoot hearing aids and accessories, and decide on appropriate action
  • Assist patients with hearing aid spare-part replacements
  • Send the hearing aid for repair if necessary
  • Sub-specialties
  • Middle Ear Implant Management - To provide fitting and tuning of various devices and necessary rehabilitation for adjustment to listening with implant amplification systems
  • Cochlear Implant Management - To provide fitting and tuning of various CI devices and necessary rehabilitation for adjustment to listening with implant amplification systems
Secondary Responsibilities
  • To liaise with clinicians, audiologists, technicians, nurses, clerical staffs, BME engineers, equipment vendors and hearing device distributors
  • To coordinate audiometric findings with medical, educational, social and behavioral diagnostic data; interpret audiometric results for patients, health care and allied professionals
  • To refer to related medical, educational and other professional groups such as medical social workers
  • To liaise with third party for equipment maintenance and ordering consumables
  • Other general duties:
  • Perform daily calibration of equipment
  • Monitor and keep records of clinic consumables and hearing aid stocks
  • To facilitate ordering, shipping and receiving of hearing aids and implant and its accessories
  • Ensure all equipment are kept on regular preventive maintenance and well documented
  • Attend to e-mail (common Audiology team inbox and telephone inquiries from local and overseas patients
  • Ensure all IT risk mitigation measures are in placed
  • Writing meeting of minutes and reports.
  • Collate monthly patients' statistics
  • Assist in planning of staff roster
  • Supervise new/junior audio technicians and provide on-the-job training, if necessary
  • Stay updated with new instrumentation, techniques, and procedures by attending workshops, seminars, and in-service education classes
  • To provide in-service lectures to clinic staff and in-house lectures for medical officers on basic audiology topics and updates
  • To be involved in research activities as co-researcher
  • Attend to ad-hoc assignments assigned by Reporting Officer
