Job Description


UWCSEA Dover has a vacancy from August 2023 for the role of Boarding Houseparent. The successful applicant will play an important role in ensuring the welfare of 180 international boarding students aged 13-20 and take responsibility within a team for the smooth operation of the boarding houses.

Main Responsibilities

Pastoral Care

  • To ensure a thorough understanding of College safeguarding, health and safety policies and procedures.
  • To provide the key point of contact between Boarders, their parents and the clinic, counsellors and other health professionals to support their physical and emotional wellbeing.
  • Take responsibility for mentoring a designated group of boarders ensuring good record keeping and communication with interested parties such as parents, guardians, teachers, principals, counsellors and the UWC Foundation as needed.
  • To lead or assist with grievances and disciplinary issues that arise within the framework of the College Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure the development and maintenance of a caring community by modelling positive and consistent attitudes and values to students. Providing advice, support and information to students in their study and recreational activities.
  • Contributing positively to the team of boarding staff in the holistic operation of the Boarding House.
Operational responsibility
  • To take responsibility for ensuring the standard of the physical boarding environment
  • Contribute to the UWC/life skills program as required and cooperate with other staff and the Director of Residential Life in the day to day operation of the Boarding House.
  • Proactively communicate openly with other staff and the Director of Residential Life on all matters related to the life and operation of the Boarding House.
  • To direct and support day parents and assistant houseparents when working in the boarding house
  • To lead/oversee an aspect of the boarding house (example: UWC programme, life skills programme, catering, orientation, activities, finance or another area of operation).
Working hours

Working hours are based on a rostered schedule (aiming for an average 44 hours per week) to ensure the boarding operation run smoothly. To expect to contribute/respond as needed to the events both extracurricular or unexpected as the school calendar or situational needs arise. To collaborate with colleagues to cover some holiday days when boarders remain in residence.

Person Specifications
  • To be a personable, conscientious positive role model with high levels of empathy and integrity.
  • be someone who wants to looks for continual personal development and a willingness to learn.
  • Possess a degree, diploma with the right experience may be considered
  • Possessing a First Aid Certificate would be an advantage, but can be obtained once employed.
  • The post holder must have a proven record of delivering excellent pastoral care for a minimum of five years. They should come from a teaching, psychology, social worker or other related background.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide consistent and effective supervision, guidance and discipline to adolescents and young adults
  • Demonstrated skills in establishing effective communication and working relationships based on mutual respect as part of a close knit supportive staff team.
  • Have effective oral and written communication skills, meets deadlines and has the ability to use relevant technologies.
  • Demonstrated success in student leadership and a record of success in leading young people, supervising students in a residential environment. Communicate in a positive manner with boarding students and, where required by the Director of Residential Life, with parents.
