Job Description




The NUS Public Art Initiative was launched in 2022, arose from the appointment of the NUS Public Art Committee (PAC), from the Office of President, to advice and sustain the NUS public art policy in tandem with campus development. Towards a university public art collection serving NUS mission to educate, inspire and provide enjoyment for the NUS Community, its stakeholders and the public. As a distinct Collection it showcases works of artists affiliated to the NUS, Singapore-based artists, and others whose works and collaborative approaches may contribute to the broader objectives of public art on campus.

Varied Public Art programs are developed providing students a springboard into interdisciplinary research engagement, widening their perspectives, with a critical understanding of their discipline and its wider relevance in a global world.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the University Curator and Chairman PAC, the Curator (Public Art) administers activities relating to the Public Art Committee and provides oversight to the management of public art registry.

Public Art Committee Secretariat Function

  • Liaising with PAC Chairman, to manage the Public Art Committee, its membership and its activities, and to provide yearly report of activities undertaken by the PAC to President;
  • To organise yearly budget submissions and administer spending;
  • To organise and evaluate proposals from Departments/Units for Committee\'s further consideration and approval;
  • To manage meetings and agenda, and follow ups arising from these meetings
Public Art Registry
  • To provide oversight to registry of artworks in NUS, and conduct yearly review of the artworks and their status for the purpose of reporting.
Public Art Initiatives
  • Where adopted by the Committee as its own programme, plan and curate projects that may include (1) Student public art competition, (2) Exhibitions and art commissions and (3) Talks and workshops; developed collaboratively with Departments/Units and where relevant oversee project management;
  • Where endorsed by the Committee, provide curatorial advice or support to Departments / Units for projects that may include artist-in-residence and commissioning of artworks.
Requirements
  • A graduate or post-graduate degree in contemporary art, art history, visual cultures or related fields
  • At least 5 years of experience working in a curatorial capacity, preferably with experience in working on public art, public programmes. Recent graduates may also apply.
  • Keen interest in and knowledge of contemporary art practices
  • Excellent research, writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Fluency in English. Additional language abilities would be ideal
  • Motivated and team-oriented, able to adapt to a fast paced environment
  • Good project management and organizational skills
  • Meticulous, resourceful and with a strong sense of initiative.
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
