UWCSEA East

seeks an experienced candidate for the position of Freelance Climbing Coach for seasonal work. This individual reports directly to the Director of Community Operations and Activities, as well as Heads of Activities (High School/Middle School/Primary School) and Activities at Height Coordinator on East Campus.

United World College South East Asia East Campus Sports Programme aims to discover and develop the potential in each and every student commensurate with age and ability in a wide range of activities.

Main Responsibilities



Coaching & Athlete Development Plan and deliver structured climbing sessions aligned with programme goals. Provide constructive feedback to support technical, tactical and personal growth. Encourage sportsmanship, resilience and positive team dynamics. Safety & Equipment Oversight Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all students, adhering to safeguarding policies and supervising students effectively during sessions and competitions. Perform pre- and post-session equipment and facilities' checks Ensure all climbing equipment is used correctly and remains within serviceable condition. Follow risk management procedures and report any concerns or incidents immediately. Monitor wall conditions and communicate any safety-related maintenance needs. Professional Conduct & Punctuality Arrive on time and prepared for all sessions, meetings and competitions. Model responsible, respectful and professional behavior at all times. Respect time commitments and notify relevant parties of any unavoidable delays or absences. Wear appropriate attire and maintain readiness to lead safe and effective sessions. Communication & Collaboration Maintain clear and timely communication with athletes, parents and colleagues. Support integration with school or organisational activities when relevant. Participate in team meetings, workshops and planning sessions. Administrative Duties Maintain attendance records and session reports as required. Assist with competition logistics, athlete registrations and post-event reviews/reflections. Contribute to progress tracking and programme evaluation efforts.

Person Specifications



Minimum SNCS Level 2 certification. Site Specific Training Validation For UWCSEA (carried out on-site for successful candidate). Qualified climbing coach with excellent experience in coaching children (K1 - G12). Proficient in written and spoken English. Valid First Aid and CPR certification. Safeguarding/Child Protection Training (preferred or must be completed upon appointment). Ability to collaborate with other staff members in the college to assist in the planning of lessons and developing the programme. To demonstrate a commitment to making a positive difference to the lives of students and members of the UWCSEA community. 1 - 2 years of coaching experience is preferred, ideally within an international school or club setting. Applicants without direct experience will also be considered if they show strong motivation and interest in coaching and supporting the development of climbing athletes. Experience coaching both individual skills and team strategy, with a track record of improving performance and athlete engagement. Effectively manage risk throughout the programme. Experience working in a multicultural, diverse school environment is an advantage. Strong technical knowledge of climbing, including contemporary coaching practices. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and mentor students. Positive role model who demonstrates professionalism, reliability, and enthusiasm. Culturally sensitive and adaptable, with a commitment to the holistic development of students. Advantageous: Experience in coaching coaching children from K1 through Grade 12. Willingness to travel for off-site training and weekend competitions.
