Position Overview

General Manager for Research & Development and Technology, based in Singapore R&D and Technical Service Laboratory, providing functional expertise and support to the Marine, and Regional Automotive leadership teams in terms of research, product development and future technology programme. Delivery of technology strategies, programme and products as required by the technology and business stakeholders. Facilitating technology connectivity and synergy across Marine and Regional Automotive businesses, raw materials, and products.

Member of the Global technology Leadership team and closely embedded with and fully guided by business teams to ensure close coordination and alignment of support on technology and product development for strategic and operational Leadership of the Singapore R&D lab and team

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Member of Global Technology Leadership team, closely aligned with and guided by Marine and Regional business leadership teams.

Strategic Leadership

• Provide the chemical and formulation expertise to support the business teams in their development of credible technology underpinning and understanding in response to key industry and business challenges and opportunities.
• Work with the respective business teams to develop business relevant and agreed technology, product, or communications responses.
• Working with business and functional stakeholders support the development of the technology roadmap for Marine and Regional Automotive Businesses, addressing future challenges and opportunities in fulfilling our customer needs at the lowest cost.
• Develop technology options, pilot test cases, and run larger demonstrations in the development of the formulation architecture and raw material choices under guidance and in consultation with the business. Embedding sustainability is a key element in the technology leadership (eg leveraging re-refined and bio and waste sourced materials), demonstrations of multi and future fuel capabilities.
• In partnership with the business, develop the external presence in Industry and OEM forums providing organization visibility and presenting organization as a thought leader in technology and sustainability. Support the business teams in their communications and relationship strategies
• Provide the functional expertise to the respective business teams for critical analysis of competitive technology (and business) position in Marine and Regional Automotive markets and to work with the respective business teams to develop business relevant and agreed technology, product or communications
• Support the businesses in understanding the chemicals landscape and its impact on product development from a safety and cost perspective.
• Aligning with business stakeholders to articulate position, leveraging leading institutes and facilities and partnerships as appropriate (Academic and Consultancies)
• Enable maximum value to be leveraged for the overall business from the new plant in Singapore.

Technology Leadership

• Develop lab, pilot and scale technology programmes to showcase organization as a technology and sustainability partner aligned with business objectives.
• Provide the functional expertise to support the relevant business teams to develop fit for purpose, cost optimised formulations and optionality for Marine and Regional Automotive businesses under the guidance of the business leadership teams and technology stakeholders to ensure relevance and timeliness.
• Provide technology inputs and optionality to differentiate and tailor products as required for individual markets or specific market needs, as requested by business leadership teams
• Scope and commission a new R&D/technical service lab in Singapore and be accountable for its workload and delivery.
• Develop, align and deliver technology programmes in this lab, co-ordinating with business and other global technology labs to deliver maximum value.
• Develop the bench test equipment, rig access and field trial protocols to demonstrate and ensure the optimised formulations are fit for purpose and demonstrate suitability or differentiation (as required).
• Provide research and scientific capability to support Marine and Regional Automotive businesses and provide the respective business problem solving in its current operations
• Provide formulation advice to Marine and Regional Automotive businesses in service of their strategic business objectives (could be fit for purpose, differentiation, optionality, supply issues etc).

Organizational

• Working across Marine, Automotive businesses and technology function enhance visibility and co-operation and synergy between the technologies, raw materials and products to ensure maximum value.
• Leadership of elements of global automotive portfolio optimisation and development activities.
• Provide the chemical and formulation technology support to the operational technology and business stakeholders in Marine and Regional Automotive businesses in areas such as research and technical support, problem solving, customer engagement, and field trials.
• Finding and implementing best practice for technology and technical processes; streamlining ways of working and activity sets to ensure best technical delivery and compliance at minimum complexity.

Experience

• Senior level technical and leadership capability and experience; likely 10 years plus in additive or lubricant technology.
• Commercially astute and seasoned in managing internal and external relationships across the hierarchy.
• Experience of cross lubricant and additive applications; large engines (marine), heavy duty, automotive and industrial segments
• Basic engineering knowledge but main requirement is understanding of additive and lubricant chemistry and formulations
• Degree level in chemistry/chemical engineering or related field
• Industry visibility - either in Industry forums, OEMs or lubricant and additive field would be highly advantageous.
• Experience of \'\'selling technology\'\' to customers and manufacturers.
• Experience of developing technology strategies and roadmaps and operationalising these into technology programmes and products
