Job Description




Head, Data Engineering and ArtificiaI Intelligence (AI) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUSmed) is entrusted with a multifaceted role that involves shaping a long-term vision for harnessing the power of data across the 10 Translational Research Programs (TRPs) under the guidance of the Vice-Dean (Research). These programs encompass critical initiatives such as Assoc. Prof Jason Lee\'s Heat Resilience and Performance Centre, Prof Michael Chee\'s Centre for Sleep and Cognition, as well as numerous associated clinical trials.

A core aspect of this role revolves around the strategic architecture and leadership required to establish a robust Common Data Infrastructure for research cohorts. This infrastructure aims to achieve significant cost savings by streamlining data management processes, enforcing rigorous data governance and privacy compliance, and optimizing research efficiency throughout NUSmed. Moreover, this role is at the forefront of championing the adoption of cutting-edge AI and Machine Learning (ML) capabilities in the realms of healthcare and biomedical research. Notably, it places a strong emphasis on the application of core frontier technologies like Explainable AI (XAI) and Privacy Preserving Technology (PPTech) to drive rapid adoption in clinical settings, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the healthcare sector and extending its positive impact beyond. Furthermore, the Head actively fosters collaborative relationships with industry leaders, research institutions, healthcare clusters, and government bodies. These collaborations are instrumental in advancing interdisciplinary research, particularly in areas such as digital health and AI, where innovation and transformative breakthroughs are imperative. The Head is dedicated to the establishment of transformative training programs on incorporating computational methods to the medical fraternity. These programs are designed to equip researchers, medical students, and professionals with essential computational skills, empowering them to make ground-breaking discoveries and harness the full potential of machine learning for tangible, real-world impact.

Responsibilities include:

  • Architect and lead the building of Common Data Infrastructure across research cohorts in NUSMed for computational efficiency, cost savings, data governance and setting the foundation for future exploitation (i.e. AI/ML capabilities)
  • Establish cutting edge MLOps and LLMOps process flows to enable AI and ML to be applied at scale
  • Lead programs to leverage on frontier technology to overcome obstacles in adoption of AI and ML in healthcare such as Explainable AI (XAI) and Privacy Preserving Technologies (PPTech)
  • Lead and nurture engagement with important stakeholders in industry, research institutions, healthcare clusters and government
  • Establish programs to advance interdisciplinary work between computational engineers with clinicians, as well as training programs on computational methods
Qualifications
  • Bachelors or Masters in a quantitative discipline such as Computer Science, Engineering or Applied Mathematics
  • Certifications in cloud technology (e.g. AWS) and scrum methodology (e.g. CSM)
  • Demonstrated leadership with a strategic vision for advancing data-driven initiatives and AI adoption in healthcare
  • Expertise in data engineering, AI, ML and healthcare systems
  • Proven track record of delivering large scale data platforms
  • Experience leading and growing highly technical teams
  • Proactive with strong problem-solving, negotiation and communication skills interface with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to foster collaboration between technical teams and healthcare professionals for impactful projects
  • Strong focus on achieving measurable impact through strategic data and AI/ML application in healthcare
