Job Description

UWCSEA East has a vacancy for August 2023 for a Head/Teacher of High School Art. The successful candidate must have a tertiary qualification in relevant subjects and significant experience teaching Visual Arts to 14 -18 year-olds. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate that they are an excellent and inspiring practitioner with the drive to continually develop within the profession.

There is also a possibility for additional responsibility as Head of K-12 Art.

Main Responsibilities

The appointed Head/Teacher of High School Art will oversee the quality of the learning within their classes and ensure that the values, which underpin the College's mission, are reflected in student learning experiences. The appointee will play an active role in continually supporting our positive High School environment in order for all students to thrive.

Key teaching responsibilities include:

  • Teachers construct learning experiences that challenge students, support the diversity of learners in each classroom. This includes demonstrating a strong commitment to concept-based teaching and learning, along with a commitment to putting intercultural understanding into practice within the classroom.
  • Teachers contribute positively to the collaborative culture of the Visual Art and broader High School teams.
  • High School Art teachers plan and teach a variety of levels with a good understanding of the progression of conceptual Arts education from Grade 9 to 12; considering practical skills, developmental and experiential needs and the Elements of the Visual Arts.
  • Teachers incorporate intercultural understanding into academic learning and the classroom environment.
  • Teachers ensure assessments support ongoing learning and provide timely, relevant and appropriate feedback to students on formative and summative assessments.
  • Teachers demonstrate effective classroom management that shows an understanding of the academic, social and emotional dimensions of learning.
  • Teachers keep parents informed about the learning of their children, and be proactive in communication with parents.
  • Teachers support personal and social-emotional learning through academic classes. They also work collaboratively with the Heads of Grade, Counselling, Learning Support and EAL departments as part of a student support services team in order to support all students in thriving.

Persons Specifications
  • A good degree and recognised teaching qualification or certification in Art are expected.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal skills, experience and pedagogical knowledge in areas outlined by the UWCSEA Learning Principles and the UWCSEA Profile.
  • Experience of developing concept-based teaching approaches, contemporary assessment practices and the application of blended learning to enhance learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively, communicate clearly, self-manage and to think and act in critical, creative and innovative ways to support teaching and learning.
  • Teachers should be willing and eager to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education: Academics; Activities; Outdoor Education; Personal and Social Education and Service
  • Academic expectations include enthusiastic participation in Professional Learning
  • Pastoral expectations include the leadership of a mentor group, unless the teacher is exempted due to other responsibilities
