Position Qualifications Masters (preferred) or Bachelor's Degree Minimum of 5 years experience working as a high school college counselor or a college admissions representative Minimum of 2 years of leadership experience in high school college counseling or a college admissions preferred Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills Strong organizational skills Ability to lead and facilitate teams Ability to work independently Comfort with learning new technology Ability to meet deadlines Experience working with a wide variety of people Proven ability to work with families, students, colleagues, and school leaders Ability to respond effectively to the needs of diverse, multicultural and the high expectations of student and parent populations Experience working in a high school environment Proficient in technology related to college admissions ( e.g. , Cialfo, Common Application, UCAS) and familiarity with at least one school-based scheduling system ( e.g ., PowerSchool Veracross) Teacher or counselor certification is not a requirement, but is preferred Description: The Dean of College Counseling is responsible for leading all aspects of the college counseling, college search, and college admissions process in support of students and families. The Dean supervises the members of the College Counseling Department. The Dean serves as the principal liaison with college and university admissions officers as well as with national and regional professional organizations. The Dean serves on the high school leadership team, the course development team, as well as other working groups as assigned. The Dean plays a significant role in leading the college curriculum design process and college and career readiness support in grades 9-12 and in partnership with other divisions. Primary Responsibilities: Oversee the College Counseling team Help recruit, hire and onboard new college counselors Supervise college counselors and college counseling support staff Lead the College Counseling PLC. Lead the department to ensure culture of trust, feedback and 'Culture of We' with collective ownership for working with all students, families, norming/calibration within the PLC, and in alignment with the school priorities Lead assignment of students to college counselors Plan, develop and oversee the department budget Lead Student Supports Meet with juniors and seniors individually and in groups, and manage designated caseload to support them with the college process and individual college choices. Advise Grade 8-10 students and parents on curricular choices and how best to prepare for the college readiness process, habits, mindsets, and four year planning Lead strategic change Develop and implement a multi-year strategic plan based on the recommendations coming out of the college counseling review and future emerging needs. Lead the development, documentation, and communication of college counseling policies in alignment with the review recommendations. Lead the development and implementation of new college counseling-related innovative programs aligned with the review recommendations. Collaborate with the Personal Academic Counseling team to ensure sustained focus on students' social and emotional health through the college consideration, application and transition processes. Work with high school leaders and other key stakeholders to recommend and help to develop academic programs in support of SAS's college and career-readiness objectives, including acting as a liaison for colleges and universities to provide feedback on course development and to help assure that the depth and breadth of curricular offerings are valued. Lead the development of college counseling curriculum, administration of required assessments, and norming/calibration within the team. Respond to family and student queries regarding college counseling policy. Make critical strategic program recommendations to school leaders. Lead professional development Carefully track current issues and trends in college admission, higher education, and testing Support the professional learning of all college counselors, including attendance at conferences and college visits Lead professional learning with stakeholder groups to support college readiness throughout the secondary continuum. Lead coaching and professional development with HS faculty that positions them to support their students through the college application process and builds understanding about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing/ Foster relationships with parents and school community stakeholders Work closely with the SAS community to establish positive programmatic perceptions and clear lines of communication. Develop and oversee communications plans and parent education opportunities for parents and students. Identify and take action on key opportunities to grow or evolve in our partnerships with parents. Foster relationships with internal teams outside of College Counseling Act as liaison to the Superintendent, Board of Governors, Senior Leadership Team, school leaders, and parent organizations on college counseling matters. Make regular presentations to these bodies as appropriate as well as special presentations upon request. Finalize annual Board Report in August/September and supplementary Board Reports throughout the school year as needed. Serve on relevant leadership committees - High School Instructional Leadership Team, High School Leadership Team as needed, etc. Work effectively with the Office of Admissions and the Office of Communications to accurately and regularly market the school and share college-related news Foster relationships with external organizations Represent SAS and/or act as liaison with outside organizations, including the International Association for College Admission Counseling, the National Association for College Admission Counseling, The College Board, college admissions deans/directors and representativesDeans of Admission and Financial Aid, etc. Build and maintain strong personal and professional ties with college and university admissions officers. Meet with college admissions representatives who visit our campus and facilitates meetings between college and alumni representatives and our students Travel to various regions to represent the school and form strategic relationships with families, alumni, admission representatives and special constituencies. Represent SAS during summer activities as necessary. Other Perform duties and special projects as required and as assigned by the Superintendent or High School Principal. Lead and work a minimum of 10 additional hours per month outside of regular school day. Reports to: High School Principal
