The Role


Job Purpose

  • Lead as subject matter expert for inspection and materials and corrosion matters for the organization.
  • Provide support in the maintenance, assurance, technical support, and standardization of technical data and documents of the operating units, manufacturing sites, chemical plants, supply chain and distribution locations. Includes site engagement & leadership on technical & tools forums.
  • Providing support towards development of MMI related digitalization technology through utilization of 3d modelling tools (Imodel, Orbit, ContextCapture), and available and growing digital technologies (e.g. digital twin, machine vision).
  • Leverage on materials and corrosion engineering experience to provide support in development of corrosion engineering technology that would allow the company to leverage on emerging technologies and software to manage the various integrity related programs in various sites.
  • Analyze technical data and documents and processes for the businesses by working with engineering, maintenance, operations and project teams & partners.
  • Participate in Risk Based Inspection Workshops and providing the Material & Corrosion input to the development of corrosion control and inspection strategies and methodologies in line with asset maintenance reference plans.
  • Support site engineers in implementation of corrosion management framework as per internal and external standards.
  • Support site engineers in the evaluation and assessment of the different inspection and materials and corrosion related programs in the assigned asset or business. Provide inputs and recommendations geared towards continuous improvement.
  • Delivering asset integrity and holding greater accountability for assigned asset, supporting multi-disciplined teams providing greater efficiency and a stronger, integrated partnership.
  • Supporting site and TAO engineers in identification of medium to long-term integrity requirements and define an optimum methodology that is unique to suit their specific asset needs.
  • Management of Change: Understand and help to track progress of any changes (PM routines, procedure/process changes, etc.) through the MOC process as required to improve integrity and reliability performance. Understanding of MOC process is desired.
  • Data Mining and Analysis: Be able to assist MMI/FM engineers in using existing systems to monitor and report KPIs, as well as identify bad actors and threats to fabric using reliability engineering tools. Learn different methods /understand scenarios to analyze areas of improvements.
  • Support in the selection of proper Non-Destructive Techniques (NDT) based on the dominant failure mode or damage mechanism to aid in assessing equipment integrity in the assigned asset.
  • Learn from old case studies- the engineering solutions to failures and all other problems that adversely affect asset integrity with respect to static equipment and inspection, and fabric maintenance.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Carry out corrosion related investigations (RCA) of equipment failures and selection of the required repairs according to API, ASME, other International standard and recommended practice. Should have strong skills for RCA methodologies, particularly 5-Why and Cause-effect.
  • Interact and communicate with the site focal for RBI studies and maintenance strategies, understanding the intricacies about how the actual Inspection activities for static equipment and PSV/PRV have been planned and performed in various Units of Shell.
  • Keep abreast with the latest technologies available to support assets in inspection, materials and corrosion, and fabric maintenance.
Business Dimensions
  • Perform senior engineer role and other technical functions, with scope covering technical data and documents of the operating units, manufacturing sites, chemical plants, supply chain and distribution locations.
  • This role is expected to help static and to some extent rotating equipment engineers in implementing the standard maintenance strategies for inspection and fabric maintenance of various equipment uniformly in various operating units across the globe.
  • Provision, as subject matter expert (SME), for Technical Support that enables the operating units, Sites to leverage the benefits of utilizing the Engineering Services-with respect to Mechanical, Materials, Inspection, Fabric Condition Study, and Maintenance strategy to the fullest extent.
  • Leadership in MMI/FM efforts to Standardize maintenance strategies, tools, benchmarks, standards and best practices. May also be assigned to lead a team of TAO engineers in assigned Sites, OUs or Project Team with 2 to 15 members.
  • The role covers relationship management with several Upstream, downstream and Integrated Gas OUs.
Principal Accountabilities
  • Develop good understanding and building skills as per the materials and corrosion engineer’s competency.
  • To lead, in consultation with the Technical specialist, various activities for analyzing gaps and improving the materials and corrosion programs of the assets.
  • Perform role as primary data engineer, subject matter expert &/or lead engineer for a group of TAO engineers in an operating unit, manufacturing site, chemical plant and distribution location.
  • Where needed, give constructive feedbacks to the working teams to ensure success of the activities under the MMI/FM scope
  • Work with assets to understand the requirements and help them identify gaps with the guidance from senior engineers.
  • Steep learning curve to develop skills for various tools is high desirable.
  • Complete required certifications (API, NACE, ASME, ASNT) as per agreement with the line manager.
  • Constantly engage with site maintenance leads, original equipment manufacturers, vendors and conduct fabric conditions studies in consultation with site maintenance personnel’s/senior fabric maintenance engineers.
  • Interact and communicate with the site focal for fabric conditions studies and maintenance strategies, understanding the intricacies about how the actual fabric maintenance activities for rotating equipment / static equipment and other machinery have been planned and performed in various Units of Shell.
  • Understanding the functions of the various equipment and instruments and thorough knowledge of reading/ interpreting the engineering drawings (P&IDs, PEFS, PFDs).
  • Managing stakeholders/ representatives of various operating units through effective communication and identifying & resolving the bottlenecks for data analysis, maintaining issue logs and use the same in implementing changes/improvements in the processes.
  • Network with counterparts and other levels of organization across the different operating units, data centers and develop external networks outside of TAO and Shell.
  • Inspire and develop the team members.
  • Together with the MMI/FM Team Leaders, facilitate competency building for the MMI/FM team.
  • Assist team leads in coordinating, monitoring, and improving the quality and timeliness of the delivery of projects and other improvement tasks.
  • Ensure the team has a good understanding of the expectations of the stakeholders/ representatives of various operating units and is actively managing those through effective communication and identifying & resolving challenges and issues.
  • Interact and communicate with the site focal/maintenance leads for fabric maintenance related issues / initiatives / development needs and maintenance strategies, understanding the intricacies.
  • Make timely decisions under ambiguity.
Key Challenges
  • Business knowledge and operational skills on activities at the operating units, manufacturing site, chemical plant, supply chain and distribution location. Includes specific methods, software and hardware.
  • Confidence to work in virtual environment and managing engagement across different levels of stakeholders. Includes strong proficiency in using English for both spoken and written communication, as well as using Office Communicator, Instant Messaging, Video Conferencing, Outlook, etc.
  • Sound technical background is required, and candidate should be able to adapt to new challenges and ways of working.
  • Shift work following operating hours of the operating units, manufacturing site, chemical plant, supply chain and distribution location across the globe.
  • The work comes in peaks and the person needs to be very good in prioritization and managing stakeholder expectations, resilient under pressure.
  • Sound understanding of business/process workflow and having mature mindset to deal and behave under tough/challenging situations.
  • Should be able to guide the team and steer them through the tough/demanding situations and contribute in terms of technical clarifications.
  • Strong proficiency in using English for both spoken and written communication, as well as using Office Communicator, Instant Messaging, Video Conferencing, Outlook, etc.
  • Although the role involves the remote support to the operating units/sites. However, the candidate should be willing to travel to various operating units/sites across the globe as per requirements.
  • Resilient under pressure and able to work with people different culture and working style.
  • A self-starter leader and reliable deliverer, with very good verbal and written skills in English, able to negotiate with people, and able to resist undue influence that might otherwise compromise integrity of data quality.
Job Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • University Degree in Materials/Mechanical/Metallurgical Engineering or related engineering degree.
  • Required at least 5 yrs. Of experience in Oil & Gas/ Petrochemicals/Power Plants/ degree in engineering / technical/maintenance jobs from one or more of the following fields:
  • Experience working in Inspection Management systems such as w-IMS and CMMS systems like SAP
  • ASNT LEVEL II or at least 5 years experience working is mandatory preferably with field experience in conducting corrosion monitoring inspection, and wall thickness measurements, and interpretation of results.
  • Field experience in inspection processes, corrosion monitoring and related technical know-how, knowledge of various NDT processes, inspection management plans, piping integrity and maintenance of static equipment like pressure vessels, heat exchangers etc, & knowledge in Risk Based Inspection (RBI) Methodology – API 570, 580, 510, and 581.
  • API 510 or API 570 (at least 1) certification or at least 3 years experience working with those standards is preferred
  • NACE CIP Level 1 or experience in fabric/coating preparation, application, inspection, quality control and assurance, and maintenance, types of insulation and installation techniques, and preparation of work packs.
  • Good understanding of damage mechanisms in Upstream, Downstream, and Integrated Gas businesses of the petroleum/petrochemical industry.
Desirables/Added Value:
  • Experience working in maintaining Downstream Asset hierarchy/ Electronic Data Warehouse (EDW)/ Electronic Data Management Systems/ SPI Intools / Inspection Data Management Systems is preferred.
  • Professional Engineering certification (API RBI-580/581/570/510 etc.,) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of engineering standards (API, ASME, NACE, etc) is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge/Proficiency in SAP PM/MM module is an added value.
  • Knowledge/Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Access etc., is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge/Proficiency in working with data analysis software such as MatLab is preferred.
  • Effective communication skill and stakeholder management is a necessary skill for the job.
  • Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma CI methodology is an added value.
  • Strong skills for RCA methodologies, particularly 5-Why and Cause-effect is highly desirable.
  • Virtual working experience highly desirable.

Knowledge or higher-level awareness of the context of use of technical data and documentation within technical data processes, Shell’s physical processing assets (hardware) and associated operating processes (Cat Crackers, drilling ops, production and lube oil facilities).
