Job Description


UWCSEA Dover Campus has a vacancy from August 2024 for a K-12 Counsellor (Personal & Social-Emotional) to work with students across the K-12 campus.

The Counselling and Wellness Department

  • There are currently four full-time counsellors at UWCSEA Dover Campus. This role will replace a counsellor whose focus is to support students across K-12 schools. Counsellors provide a confidential and client-centred service that enhances student wellbeing and improves access to learning opportunities.
  • The counsellor\'s aim is to provide a developmentally-appropriate service which could include any or all of the following: the provision of confidential individual or group counselling services, individual student planning and goal-setting including risk assessment and safety planning, parents coaching skills, liaison with teachers and boarding house staff; and presentations to the UWCSEA community (students, parents, staff) on key wellbeing topics
  • The counsellors work collaboratively with teachers, parents and families in times of individual or collective need.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide a flexible approach that employs a range of evidence-based counselling practices to meet individual and group needs relating to social and emotion wellbeing.
  • Work collaboratively with parents and families where a need has arisen that affects student wellbeing & learning (eg. health concerns, prolonged absence, mental health concerns).
  • Work collaboratively with school and student leadership to design & develop wellbeing initiatives.
  • Refer children and their parents to external counselling / psychological support agencies when needed; and collaborate to support at-school strategies.
  • Cultivate relationships & liaise with external services to strengthen the support team around the child.
  • Be available to support individual staff members with advice that will improve the academic, social and emotional development of students.
Supporting professional development and community education
  • Help deliver professional workshops & facilitate forums for the wider school community relating to social & emotional wellbeing. Examples of programmes could include stress management, skills for general wellbeing (e.g. mindfulness), suicide awareness and intervention, and parenting programs.
  • Work within a collaborative team for continuous development and cohesion of the Counselling & Wellness Development Plan with the College Development Plan.
Logistical
  • Adhere to regulations and procedures relating to data protection and information security.
  • Ensuring CIMS (UWCSEA\'s bespoke student database) is used effectively and ethically to support students.
  • Prioritise and use data to proactively identify patterns and trends to inform focus areas for intervention.
  • Ensure accurate records of counselling sessions and safeguarding notes are maintained and properly recorded.

Person Specifications
  • A Bachelor or Masters of Psychology/Social Sciences, or a Master of Counselling degree is essential.
  • A minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience in counselling specific role, with a minimum of 2 years of counselling experience focussing on child and adolescent mental health and wellbeing is essential.
  • A minimum of 1 year of counselling experience in a K-12 school setting is desirable.
Applicants should also have relevant experience of:
  • Designing and delivering presentations and workshops to a range of audiences (students, parents, staff).
  • Developing and working in partnership with external services to provide effective student support.
  • Foundational counselling practices that can be used for short-term interventions for K-12 students including those that can be adapted for creative counselling approaches with younger students.
  • Collaboration in the design & facilitation of student support plans and social-emotional lessons for classes as needed.
  • Working with an international Boarding Community would be an advantage but is not essential.

  • Strong organisational skills to help manage counselling workload volume and preventative projects for wellbeing.
  • Ability to respond calmly & effectively to crises involving student wellbeing.
  • Ability to assess the risk of harm to self and others; provide safety planning and to refer appropriately to support services.
  • Honesty, integrity, transparency and a good sense of humour.
  • Fluency in English and excellent communication skills: written, spoken and public presentations.
  • Enthusiastic commitment to participate in Professional Learning for own development, including personal supervision and supervision of intern counsellors.
  • Ability to model compassion in action through self-care.
  • Staff should be willing and eager to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education: Academic; Personal & Social Education; Service; Activities; Outdoor Education.
