Job Description

Being a pivotal role in the concept to production of a Dyson Designed Battery Cell puts the Energy Storage Development (ESD) team at the heart of this exciting journey. The Team will translate early concept directions into fully developed, optimised & validated solutions to make at high volume for the next generation of Dyson products.

About the role

This role forms key technical leadership of the Battery Cell Build from manual to semi-automated prototyping to meet ambitious new cell technology realisation for various product application. A successful candidate will have experienced technical skills to develop new designed cells/core components prototyping capability and execute product-level prototype build ensuring dimension flexibility, quality and throughput followed by cell verification and validation from development to mass production. Reporting to the ESD Application team. Main Duties/Responsibilities:

• Be a key technical lead of new designed cells and core components (e.g. separator, electrode, jelly roll) prototyping to ensure product-level prototype cells for cell technology development.
• Establish flexible and quality-controlled cell prototyping capability, which is met for Form, Fit & Function of the cells depending on product and battery pack application.
• Develop cell build procedures that conform to specification/requirement across ESD teams by executing quality control (QC) with measurement system analysis (MSA) and statistical process control (SPC).
• Lead cross-functional experiment planning and hands-on prototyping of the cells and components with effective data management along with assisting engineers/technicians and share the outputs with all stakeholders.
• Manage cell build facility, equipment and materials in an efficient and safe manner through the collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
• Ensure all safety and operation standards in cell build environment are constructed, documented and followed.
• Build strong relationships with internal departments, external suppliers, industry bodies within Energy Storage.
• Demonstrate clear presentation of technical information and documentation to ensure accurate hand over either to other teams within UK or Far East.
• Take responsibility for cell recycling technology from the viewpoint of cell build to ensure circular economy for reducing environmental impact.

About you

Experience / Requirements:

• Experience or exposure of Energy Storage Cell technical matters in Research, Development or Production.
• Understanding of battery cell related manufacturing processes and techniques (e.g. mixing, coating, drying, casting, extruding, laminating, calendaring, stacking, welding, sealing, degassing)
• Working experience in prototyping and/or manufacturing machines (e.g. operation, data record/track/analysis, job change, maintenance, calibration, modification)
• Knowledge of general equipment mechanical & electrical principles (e.g. servo motor, pneumatics, PLC, HMI etc.)
• Ability of QC (e.g. IQC, IPQC, OQC) with MSA (e.g. Gage R&R) and SPC (e.g. Cpk, Xbar-R)
• Good organisational skills with a methodical and detailed approach.
• Good time management skills to work in flexible and multi-task manners without losing focus.
• Documentation skills to summarize and update standard operating procedures, risk assessment, RFI/RFQ and technical reports.
• Persistent approach to problem solving and an inquisitive nature.
• Must demonstrate a passion for working for Dyson.

Desirable:

• Appreciation of relevant Battery technology or battery products across the industry.
• Ability to communicate at all levels of the organisation.
• When required, travel to other Dyson facilities in Asia/UK for project engineering build support.

Qualifications / Professional Memberships:

• Educated to Degree level (scientific/engineering based)
