Lecturer, Global Experience (gex), Nus College

Singapore, Singapore

Job Description

Offer Description

NUS College (NUSC), the honours college of the National University of Singapore, plans to hire dedicated individuals to fill several vacancies. These are full-time, renewable lecturer positions that include opportunities for pedagogical and academic research and professional growth, and for promotion to Associate Professor with Open Contract on the NUS Educator Track.

The primary responsibility is to offer one of our signature courses, to which you will be expected to bring your own academic and intellectual expertise. Details of the courses are shown below:

Global Experience Course (GEx)

The GEx is a signature course of the NUSC Global Pathways Programme. GEx is a specially curated overseas course that immerses students in a global city for four weeks during the summer break. The course involves specially curated seminars with guest professors, workshops with practitioners, masterclasses with experts, fireside chats with important personalities, and field visits to pertinent sites such as start-ups, research centres, government offices, cultural and community institutions. Students are expected to participate fully in these learning activities and conduct an independent study in the city supervised by the course instructor. Each GEx has a theme that leverages the relative strengths of the urban region of the city:

GEx Themes

Paris: Arts, Culture, Diplomacy and Social Innovation

GEx Paris offers a transformational journey where students will learn about Paris and France with a focus on the themes of Arts, Culture, Diplomacy, and Social Innovation. Students will have opportunities to attend lectures with renowned academics, have conversations with high-level speakers, interact with peers, visit iconic sites, immerse in hands-on workshops and enjoy the Parisian summer cultural scene.

Stockholm: Environment and Sustainability

GEx Stockholm exposes students to topics including but not limited to water (in)security, marine conservation, climate change adaptation, and waste management. Each iteration of the GEx allows students to engage Swedish cities, institutions and its people to explore how local, regional and global forces shape environmental and sustainability action.

New York City: Media, Finance and Diplomacy

GEx New York City seeks to engage students in unpacking the city as a core global node. The intersection between media, finance and diplomacy, intertwined with history, geography and the like, intends to be a key look into the development of the city as we ponder core factors that may have held sway.

Toronto: Diversity and Inclusivity in Governance

GEx Toronto will focus on diversity and inclusion in the \xe2\x80\x9cmost diverse city in the world\xe2\x80\x9d. We resolve to study governmental policies, grassroots efforts and other endeavours that target alleviate the pressures of such a multicultural society.

Tokyo: City, Culture and Technology

GEx Tokyo examines the roles culture and technology play in everyday lives, and how they complement and conflict with one another in processes of innovation and entrepreneurship to improve lives and drive development and growth. Through site visits, discussions and explorations, students will gain insights into how strategies are derived to develop enterprises, enhance livelihood, create value, and accumulate capital in and beyond the city.

Interdisciplinary Teaching at NUSC

The secondary responsibility of the GEx lecturer is to contribute to other parts of NUSC education and more broadly to new developments in interdisciplinary education in NUS. This role would include collaborative team teaching in one of the seven core courses such as Understanding the Social World, Computational Problem Solving, Global Narratives, and Science and Society. Another option is designing and teaching more specialised, knowledge-based elective classes that are interdisciplinary in nature and draw on your own interests and expertise. Generally, all NUSC classes maintain small faculty-to-student ratios. No matter what secondary role you see yourself performing, you should have a commitment to innovation in undergraduate education, be devoted to your own research and teaching excellence, and have the willingness and ability to engage students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds.

Qualifications

Candidates should hold a PhD in a field relevant to the GEx themes by July 2023. While we are keen to hire individuals able to start by that time, we will also consider individuals able to start by July 2023. Remuneration and benefits are highly competitive on the global research university level. Benefits include relocation assistance and a housing subsidy for the first nine years. Appointments begin at the level of Lecturer on the Educator Track, or possibly the level of Senior Lecturer if previous experience warrants it. Although the NUS Educator Track is not a tenurable line, it offers a pathway to promotion to Associate Professorship on an open contract (and beyond), as well as opportunities for research funding, including overseas research and conference travel. The contract is for three years in the first instance and is renewable subject to good performance.
