What the role is:The Legal Services Unit (\xe2\x80\x9cLSU\xe2\x80\x9d) advises the Ministry of Social and Family Development (\xe2\x80\x9cMSF\xe2\x80\x9d) on a wide range of issues and subjects, including adoption, protection of children and vulnerable adults and the exercise of statutory and regulatory powers. The LSU also advises on contractual issues, vets MSF\'s transactional documents and provides legal inputs on the review and amendment of legislation under MSF\'s purview.What you will be working on:As Legal Counsel, your main focus will be to provide legal advice and support to the Child Protective Service, as well as the Adult Protective Service, to further MSF\'s mission of creating a safe and nurturing environment for children, young persons and their families, and protecting vulnerable adults who are exposed to abuse and neglect. CPS and APS provide statutory intervention and support services to protect and ensure the welfare of children and young persons and of vulnerable adults. \xe2\x80\xa2 The successful applicant will be expected to provide legal advice, draft and vet court documents for the purpose of proceedings under the Children and Young Persons Act 1993 (\xe2\x80\x9cCYPA\xe2\x80\x9d)). He/she may also be required to represent CPS in court proceedings. Apart from matters involving the CYPA, there will be opportunities to advise and assist on protection matters involving vulnerable adults, as well as other matters under MSF\'s purview such as fostering and adoption cases, and children and young persons in residential care. \xe2\x80\xa2 He/she will also have to draft and vet contracts, and provide legal inputs for law reform and review work. There will also be opportunities to work closely with the Attorney-General\'s Chambers or other external stakeholders on the management of litigation cases. \xe2\x80\xa2 The work will be intellectually challenging, and provide good opportunities to interact closely with frontline officers and policy makers. It will enable the successful applicant to sharpen his/her legal skills, and gain wide exposure to diverse fields of law and social issues.What we are looking for:

  • Possesses an LLB (Hons) degree and eligible to be called to the Singapore Bar \xe2\x80\xa2 At least 2 to 3 years of legal work experience \xe2\x80\xa2 Strong in written and spoken English \xe2\x80\xa2 Strong legal and analytical skills \xe2\x80\xa2 Good interpersonal and communication skills \xe2\x80\xa2 Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines \xe2\x80\xa2 Has a heart for social issues and for rehabilitation and protection work
