About the role
The role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial reporting and operations of the business units within the region, adhering to relevant accounting standards (including but not limited to GAAP/IFRS), relevant regulations, and internal policies.
You will oversee key financial processes and maintain robust internal controls to prevent errors, fraud, and non-compliance. By collaborating with cross-functional teams and providing timely financial insights, the position drives quality, governance and operational effectiveness, while aligning regional financial practices with the broader Group Risk and Compliance framework.
You will partner with the GM Finance Partnering in market, Corporate Finance, and The Service Hub to align finance outcomes with enterprise and business unit objectives, Group Risk and Compliance (GRC), compliance, financial standards and regulatory requirements. The role supports key activities such as external and internal audits, and the broader management of financial risk.
You will play a critical role in fostering a culture of risk management, alignment to standards, ethics and integrity by increasing awareness, providing education, coaching and support to regional financial teams.
Key Accountabilities
Financial Controlling Expertise and Execution
Ensure the financial reporting of the business unit is accurate, timely, and compliant with applicable GAAP/IFRS and local regulatory requirements for the geographic area.
Ensure regional processes comply with Group policies, including accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
Assist in the preparation and review of financial statements to meet organisational and regulatory standards.
Ensure all financial information complies with applicable local standards, laws, and regulations (e.g., AASB) as well as internal policies.
Apply a strong knowledge of financial accounting, reporting, tax compliance, and risk management to maintain adherence to regional and Group policies.
Manage and maintain internal financial controls to prevent and detect errors, fraud, and non-compliance, ensuring alignment with Group policies and regulatory requirements.
Support initiatives to identify and address control gaps, recommending and implementing improvements.
Support and contribute to root cause analysis (RCA) efforts to resolve financial reporting issues and enhance governance frameworks to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Collaborate with the GM Finance Partnering, business unit finance team, and The Service Hub to provide financial oversight, including working capital and balance sheet management.
Partner with FP&A team members to ensure alignment between financial operations and strategic goals.
Oversee financial processes within the business unit, including Record to Report (RTR), and support other processes such as Source to Pay (STP) and Invoice to Cash (ITC).
Review financial data as required to support process improvements and decision-making.
Risk Management
Conduct regular sampling and testing of financial risk controls to ensure effectiveness and compliance with organisational standards.
Apply and maintain internal controls in line with the Risk and Controls Matrix (RACM) to effectively manage financial risks within the BU.
Allocate and oversee responsibilities for managing financial risks and controls within the BU, based on the RACM and organisational priorities.
Implement and manage risk treatment and response strategies in alignment with the Enterprise Risk Management Framework, ensuring timely and effective resolution of identified risks.
Periodically review and update the Risk and Controls Matrix (RACM) to maintain its accuracy and relevance to the BU's financial risk landscape.
Regulatory Compliance and Expertise
Ensure all reports and financial statements comply with the relevant market's financial regulations, standards, and compliance requirements, ensuring accuracy and adherence to applicable laws and policies.
Provide timely advice and guidance to Corporate Finance and The Service Hub on any changes to local financial compliance requirements, ensuring alignment with updated regulations and effective implementation of necessary adjustments.
Understand comprehensively the regulatory requirements and legislation of the respective country and/or area.
Manage the engagement with local regulatory authorities and manage changes to local financial compliance requirements.
Work closely with service providers including external and internal auditors to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
Internal Controls, Policies and Compliance
Regularly execute, monitor, and validate the effectiveness of internal financial controls to prevent and detect errors, fraud, and non-compliance. Conduct periodic testing and assessments of process controls from the business unit perspective, ensuring alignment with organisational standards and regulatory requirements.
Support internal and external audit activities to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial information with established standards and regulations.
Oversee interactions and maintain effective communication with local regulatory authorities as required, ensuring timely responses to inquiries, compliance with regulatory obligations, and alignment with legal requirements.
Support internal audit to assess the effectiveness of internal controls and implement changes where required, working closely with Corporate Finance and The Service Hub to ensure internal processes controls are compliant with policies.
Adhere to all relevant Fonterra Policy and procedures in alignment with the standards set by Corporate Finance including supporting Group Risk & Compliance (GRC) submissions in the region.
Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement
Obtain a deep understanding of Fonterra's operations within their region and neighbouring areas, ensuring financial activities align with business needs and regulatory expectations
Provide timely and accurate advice to business units on compliance issues and risk management strategies.
Provide accounting, regulatory and other financial advice to business units and links into Corporate Finance and The Service Hub when appropriate.
Work with Corporate Finance to conduct training sessions and workshops to educate employees on compliance expectations and ethical standards, fostering a culture of compliance throughout Fonterra.
Maintain accountability for ethical standards in risk reporting and compliance, ensuring integrity and transparency in all financial and operational activities.
Drive the governance framework for risk and compliance across the region and set an example across Fonterra to ensure a strong culture of ethical operations across the organisation.
Serve as a principal point of contact for external auditors
Critical Skills & Experience
CA or relevant certification. CPA is also acceptable.
10+ years of experience in financial management, with a focus on financial control, demonstrates depth of knowledge from previous experience leading financial reporting and financial control for Fonterra or other organisations
Communication, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills
Familiarity with local financial regulation, compliance, tax and ESG and accounting standards e.g. GAAP / IFRS, concepts and principles
Deep financial accounting process knowledge (e.g. RTR - primary, STP, ITC, MDM)
Technical accounting knowledge
Experienced in audit and control evaluations, financial statements and reporting
Comprehensive financial risk management
Experience with financial software e.g. Blackline and ERP systems.
