About the role




This position is accountable for the successful execution of the Marine Performance Strategy to achieve compliance with both current and emerging energy efficiency regulations, in alignment with Rio Tinto's goals for improved operational efficiency and reduced emissions. In addition, the successful candidate will be accountable for overseeing the safe and efficient operation of Rio Tinto's owned vessel fleet.


Reporting to the GM Marine Operations and Performance, this position shall lead a team comprising Fleet Performance Advisors, Data Analytics Advisor, and a Fleet Manager. Effective resource allocation, activity prioritization, and team development will be an important part of the individual's responsibilities. The successful candidate will:

Manage marine efficiency and emissions reduction programmes and contribute towards delivering the long-term goal of net-zero shipping emissions. Lead monitoring and optimisation of voyage performance across all owned and chartered vessels. Lead strategy development and execution of next phase of the operational efficiency programme (e.g., Installations of Energy Saving Devices (ESDs), voyage charter optimisations and chartering guidance) to size up the value opportunity and maximise efficiency gains. Develop and implement a "Marine Performance Platform" for effective monitoring and measurement of performance and progress across the fleet, supported by appropriate Fleet Performance KPIs. Understand regulations, e.g,. EEDI/EEXI/CII/EEOI and Rio Tinto's efficiency ambitions to contribute to how we deliver and position our portfolio. Working directly with the Strategy team to leverage key strategic relationships at play. Support the strategy and chartering team in contributing towards the development of a long-term portfolio strategy. Collaborate with key stakeholders to influence commercial outcomes (e.g., with Marine Ops, Strategy, Chartering, Sales & Marketing, Digital, and externally with shipowners and other industry players). Drive the development of digital solutions as critical enablers in the delivery of performance ambitions and the Marine Performance Platform. Oversee management of Rio Tinto's vessel fleet to ensure the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and best-in-class performance. Establish excellent working relationships with our Ship Management partners to jointly achieve safety and performance outcomes through shared learning and implementation of pioneering initiatives.

About you



To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:



Bachelor's degree in finance, Engineering, or equivalent; Marine and/or Commodities industry experience preferred. 7-10 years leading teams and achieving results. Demonstrated success in delivering complex technology-driven projects. In-depth knowledge of the maritime ecosystem, maritime operations, technical knowledge, and shipboard equipment expertise are a plus. Strong commercial acumen connecting Marine value to wider business objectives. Familiarity with Marine emissions regulations and port operations is beneficial. Excellent analytical, presentation, and innovation skills. Effective project management and change leadership across cross-functional teams. Skilled at collaborating with diverse stakeholders at all organizational levels.
