A Stonemason is responsible for cutting, shaping, and installing natural or artificial stone to construct or repair building structures such as walls, facades, floors, and ornamental features. The role requires precision craftsmanship, technical knowledge, and adherence to safety and quality standards in construction projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Read and interpret architectural drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
Cut, shape, and dress stones using chisels, hammers, grinders, or saws.
Lay and align stones with mortar or other bonding materials to construct walls, arches, columns, and facades.
Repair or restore damaged stonework in existing buildings or monuments.
Prepare and mix mortar or cement for fixing and pointing stone joints.
Install stone veneers, claddings, tiles, or decorative stonework.
Polish, grind, or finish stone surfaces for a smooth and aesthetic appearance.
Erect scaffolding and ensure safe work practices at height.
Collaborate with site supervisors, architects, and other trades to meet design and quality requirements.
Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition.
Follow all safety and environmental regulations at the worksite.
Requirements:
Minimum Education: Primary or Secondary education.
Preferred Certification (Singapore):
BCA CoreTrade - Stone Masonry Work / Tiling & Stone Finishing or Certificate of Trade Test (CTT).
Apply Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) in Construction Sites (CSOC).
Experience: Minimum 2-3 years of relevant work experience in masonry, tiling, or stone finishing.
Knowledge: Understanding of different types of natural and artificial stones, bonding techniques, and finishing methods.
Skills:
Skilled in stone cutting, shaping, and fitting with precision.
Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings and layouts.
Knowledge of mortar mixing, cement ratios, and adhesion methods.
Ability to use hand and power tools such as grinders, saws, and polishers.
Understanding of structural alignment, leveling, and measurement.
Experience in restoration and decorative stonework preferred.
Attention to detail, symmetry, and aesthetic finishing.
Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
Strong safety awareness and compliance with construction regulations.
Teamwork and communication skills for coordination with other trades.
Physical strength and endurance for handling heavy materials.
Problem-solving ability for irregular shapes or design challenges.
Time management and reliability in meeting project deadlines.
