Job Description


The School of Dance & Theatre resides in the Faculty of Performing Arts and the School is a leader in contemporary performance practices in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Dedicated to developing thoughtful, reflective and adventurous talents for the performing arts sector, the School offers a range of Diploma and BA(Hons) programmes in Dance, Acting, Musical Theatre, Performance and Theatre Production and Management. It is well-known for its experimental and interdisciplinary approaches, hallmarked by top-class performance venues for student performances and presentations.

The School of Dance & Theatre is seeking to appoint a Programme Leader for the BA(Hons) Acting programme.

Reporting to the Dean of Performing Arts and Head of School of Dance & Theatre, you will be the main Acting lecturer teaching into the programme as well as be responsible for the academic leadership and management of the programme with the aim of achieving students\' learning outcomes. Your key responsibilities include overseeing the curriculum and its continuing development, the planning and coordination of classes and managing students\' performances and productions relevant to the programme. As a leader, you will set the tone and direction of the programme to meet high standards of excellence. You will also manage the programme efficiently within the allocated resources and budget, which includes selection and management of part-time staff and a range of visiting artists.

In addition to academic administration, the Programme Leader also undertakes teaching of Acting skills and Stanislavskian and post-Stanislavskian techniques. The ideal candidate would be conservatoire trained and should be able to teach some of the following elements: theatre history, improvisation, acting for screen, performance for musicals or other specialized performance techniques. The ideal candidate may direct student performances at times.

As Programme Leader, you will also provide strong and active commitment to the encouragement and furtherance of staff professional development, practice and research, and we encourage applications from individuals with an established professional practice. A research profile (practice research or publication) is also desirable.

Requirements:

  • Postgraduate qualification or equivalence, preferably PhD or equivalent with substantial professional practice as an actor or director.
  • At least 10 years of tertiary-level teaching experience with knowledge of Higher Education Quality Assurance Framework and at least 5 years of full-time professional experience either in directing or acting.
  • Some experience of teaching performance within a multicultural context, and an awareness of the performing arts industry in Singapore.
  • At least 7 years or the equivalent in course/programme management and the supervision and development of teaching staff or equivalent relevant management experience.
  • Substantial knowledge of the academic framework of higher education in arts institutions.
  • Knowledge of contextualising academic programme content, managing curriculum planning, programme budget and programme delivery.
  • Teacher training qualification is an advantage.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to engage students through a range of delivery modes.
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team and collaborate with colleagues at all levels.
  • Good pastoral care skills would be advantageous.
  • A positive attitude to research in performance and educational fields with preferably a personal research profile and willingness to mentor emerging researchers.
