The Role


Where you fit in? The purpose of the Trading & Supply (T&S) business is to maximize sustained value creation across commodity markets in support of overarching Downstream objectives of material cash generation and a high return on capital. The Commercial Operations organization includes both ‘run the business capabilities’ covering trading operations support activities (previously in GOCs and Regional Comm Ops), as well as ‘change the business capabilities’ through enhanced business transformation activities such as a joint data and digital team, project delivery, and Centre of Excellence. The Project & Programme Delivery team is a lean and flexible pool of experienced project managers with change management and PMO competences focusing on delivering cross T&S initiatives (for example risk projects) in alignment with the overall T&S business strategy and ambitions. The PPD team are responsible for a broad range of projects in scope (from Commercial, Operations and Risk focused), type (Business Transformation, Process redesign, Compliance, SBO migration, technology, etc) and size (from small improvement projects to multi-year programmes). Recent programmes have included risk remediation, Counterparty Lifecycle Management, KYC and Sanctions. What’s the role?

Reporting to the Sr. Projects Mgr. in the Programme Delivery team, the Project Manager delivers strategic cross T&S projects that support the implementation of the T&S strategy. The project delivery organisation is a new highly driven team of project management experts focused on delivering real solutions that add business value and help drive the T&S agenda forward. The projects within the delivery portfolio will range from Commercial, Operational or Risk focused depending on the business priority. As a project manager, you will be expected to deliver projects that vary in size, scale and complexity across a global business. The Project Manager has responsibility for:
  • Working with the BOM or Project sponsor to develop the business problem statement and developing the project execution strategy.
  • Setting the project or programme up for success by ensuring fit-for-purpose Project/Programme Management processes and standards and ensuring delivery excellence in all aspects of project delivery.
  • Delivering project outcomes within time, budget and quality.
  • Managing interdependencies/dependencies across the T&S business and delivery ecosystem, leveraging the best of Shell and delivery partner skills and resources.
  • Collaborating with the Delivery team to bring customer, business and IT requirements together into a vision that represents the overall direction and scope of the solution.
  • Actively engaging stakeholders throughout the Project life cycle ensuring alignment between the business, the project sponsor, the stakeholders and the delivery team(s).
  • Transitioning the project outcomes at project closure to the appropriate business, operations or risk teams to allow them to embed the changes.
The Project Manager will be expected to:
  • Business case- use problem solving skills to capture business problems, value drivers, and functional/non-functional requirements to define the problem statement with the business and obtain business buy-in for the project from a diverse and senior stakeholder community.
  • Initiate project- define scope and business outcomes, determine delivery approach with resource, timeline and budget requirements, check feasibility.
  • Planning- develop detailed resource-based project plans which show dependencies and defined delivery roles.
  • Governance- establish fit for purpose Governance to oversee management of the projects to ensure they deliver against their objectives, have effective decision-making processes and maintain senior stakeholder support.
  • Delivery- assess the risks, feasibility, opportunities, and business impacts of various solution options and motivate and drive a cross functional team (internal and external) to deliver to plan and budget.
  • Tracking- track project progress against plan and budget, manage project scope through a change control process.
  • Risk and Issue management- Identify and manage risks and issues to keep delivery on track, mitigating risks and making interventions to remove project blockers or escalate early for support in resolution.
  • Reporting- Consistently report progress to senior management using executive summaries supported by key delivery metrics.
  • Stakeholder management- manage stakeholder relationships at senior levels in the T&S organisation (VP, VP-1).
  • Impacts- Understand the drivers behind the business requirements and expectations, identifies business impacts and ensures an appropriate change management plan is in place to address how the changes will impact business stakeholders.
  • Team- Maintain a collaborative working environment where the team is motivated to deliver and actively develop the culture of a high performing team.
  • Project closure- assess project status against closure criteria and manage transition into business team. Evaluate and share successes and learnings to enhance future projects.
  • Actively participate in developing the Project & Programme Delivery Community, providing support and mentoring and participating in cross project assurance activities.
Dimensions:
  • No direct reports but expected to manage cross functional teams and deliver project outcomes.
  • Represent project status in Governance forums with senior leadership.

  • Motivated by organisational change, with sufficient knowledge and competency in strategic problem solving, project management and change management to structure problems and deliver sustainable change outcomes.
  • Uses initiative and can make reasoned decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to motivate and drive the performance of a team which is outside of direct line management.
  • Positive communicator able to promote the positive impact of change within the organisation.
  • Strong stakeholder relationship skills to drive sponsorship, buy-in and sign-off during. projects and can influence key stakeholders at all levels in the organisation where necessary.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to work independently and share knowledge and learnings.
  • Experienced in working in global teams and with third parties.
  • Professional qualifications in project management desired e.g. PRINCE 2, PMP, Agile project management, Scrum.
  • Experience and knowledge of project management methodologies and tools.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university (or equivalent work experience).
  • Experienced in project management (+5 years)
  • Strong business knowledge in Trading, Operations or Risk (8+ years of experience)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Must be comfortable speaking up, escalating concerns and can provide an independent view and voice.
