Job Description


The Future Ready Food Safety Hub (FRESH) invites applications for the position of Project Officer.

The Future Ready Food Safety Hub (FRESH) serves as Singapore\xe2\x80\x99s lead scientific platform under the Singapore Food Story R&D Programme, to bring together researchers, regulators and industry to build up Singapore\xe2\x80\x99s food safety science and R&D capabilities to secure Singapore\xe2\x80\x99s food supply and economic value proposition. FRESH will embark on R&D and talent development activities to help enhance Singapore\xe2\x80\x99s local food regulatory capabilities and allow \xe2\x80\x9cfirst-in-market\xe2\x80\x9d food products to be safely launched in Singapore, as well as help promote Singapore-developed food standards internationally. FRESH is part of the Singapore Food Story R&D Programme (SFS), with partner organisations being the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), A*STAR and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

The FRESH lab is seeking to hire a meticulous, enthusiastic and resourceful project officer to work on 2 analytical based projects. The first is an awarded grant project under the Singapore Food Story (\xe2\x80\x9cSFS\xe2\x80\x9d) R&D Programme focused on red yeast cell mass production as a tool to enhance food security and reducing carbon footprint in urban cities. The PO will be working the development of targeted analytical methods to quantify levels of key controllable components such as carotenoids, as well as the development of untargeted methods to characterize secondary metabolites present in the biomass that may have the potential for causing adverse effects. Attention will focus on sample preparation of complex matrices using LC- analytical methods. The second is a project focused on the use of hyperspectral imaging for analyzing contaminants in food ingredients and will involve developing spectral libraries for known contaminants along with principle component analysis approaches to distinguish materials in complex mixtures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support FRESH research fellows working on the analysis and characterization of red yeast biomass and other food matrices of interest
  • Prepare/analyse samples for LC-MS and hyperspectral analysis (includes method development)
  • Plan and manage experiments, including ordering of relevant chemicals and consumables
  • Maintain data records and results ensuring data integrity
  • Maintain general lab functions and cleanliness
  • Ensure appropriate safety and risk assessments are in place for lab activities
  • Help track and report FRESH project deliverables
  • Actively integrate into the FRESH team and assist where possible on other FRESH lab activities if time permits.
Job Requirements:
  • Minimum Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in analytical chemistry or food science with a major in chemistry
  • At least 2 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in an academic or industrial research setting
  • Hands-on experience with LC-MS systems
  • Hands on experience with fluorescence spectroscopy; direct experience with A-TEEMs spectroscopy a plus
  • Must have great attention to details, highly independent at the same time a team player, motivated, pro-active and creative to accomplish complex tasks
  • Interested in interaction with multiple teams for collaborative work
  • Enthusiasm to learn new approaches and drive research projects
  • Excellent skills in record keeping/documentation and good time management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
