The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) invites applications for a Research Assistant position in the project focused on "Understanding the Environmental Phosphorous Proxy in Corals and Other Biogenic Carbonates from Fundamental Quantum Mechanical Investigation."

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research that aims to refine our understanding of environmental phosphorous indicators in key biominerals. This project is in partnership with Dr. Patrick Martin from Asian School of the Environment (ASE), NTU.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform quantum mechanical simulations to understand phosphorous incorporation in calcium carbonate polymorphs.

Use both CALYPSO and AIRSS methods to compare and verify the results of structure predictions, Particular in relation to understanding volatile cycling in the solid Earth

Collect and analyze data on the incorporation of phosphorous into aragonite, calcite, and vaterite.

Collaborate with team members to interpret findings and relate them to environmental samples.

Prepare reports, manuscripts, and presentations to disseminate research findings.

Assist in the development of new geochemical proxies, potentially extending to p-block trace elements like nitrogen, arsenic, and antimony.

Prepare literature surveys to outline research / technology development in the field

Prepare reports and documentations for the research programs, and support data analysis

Assist in duties related with relevant teaching activities

Job Requirement:

Bachelor\'s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field

Prior research experience in environmental science or geochemistry

Experience with computational modeling and simulations

Strong computational skills, familiarity with quantum mechanical simulation tools, including VASP, CASTEP, AIRSS, CALYPSO

Proficient in data analysis and interpretation, Proficient in data analytics software (e.g., Python, R)

Excellent written and oral communication skills
