The HLTRP brings together scientists and clinicians to investigate the multifaceted aspects of ageing in an effort to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the biology of ageing, and to add healthy years of life by delaying ageing, prolonging disease-free life and adding quality by allowing people to be more active and engaged. The Centre for Healthy Longevity (CHL), one of 6 Centres of Excellence of the NUHS, aims to be a leading institute for geroscience research and translation globally, renowned for translating research into practice to improve healthspan.

Alexandra Hospital, a member of the National University Health System (NUHS) cluster, is a historic site providing integrated, holistic care to patients. The hospital is a test bed for innovative care approaches in Singapore and is currently running a diverse portfolio of studies and projects. The Well Programme focuses on preventive care for both the public and employees, helping people to Be Better.

This position is a shared role, working across the Alexandra Hospital Well Programme and the Healthy Longevity Translational Research Program (HLTRP), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, with an affiliation with the NUHS Centre for Healthy Longevity.

The successful candidate will be expected to support various healthcare projects across the organisations with important implications for health and wellness (e.g. developing personalised exercise interventions targeted for healthy middle aged persons to improve performance).



Purpose of the role

The Research Assistant (Exercise Science) role is dedicated to supporting a world-first, Healthy Longevity Medicine Clinic at Alexandra Hospital. Critical to this position is to have the capability to work within the Alexandra Hospital clinical team and across various research projects. It is thus expected that the successful candidate will have some experience in exercise testing, prescription, and health coaching. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to perform research tasks such as data collection and analysis. Finally, there will be opportunities for the successful candidate to be involved in manuscript writing and project presentations.

The role will suit a person with a background in the exercise sciences or allied health, with strong analytical and organizational skills, as well as technical experience in delivering exercise testing protocols, such as running cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). The successful candidate will also be expected to engage with internal and external stakeholders and enjoy managing multiple demands and competing deadlines.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Assistant (exercise science) is expected to:

  • Work with the clinical and research teams to manage the day-to-day activities of the various services including their development, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Perform routine clinical assessments according to Standard Operating Procedures in clinical practice and ongoing research studies.
  • Interpret participant tests and procedures, including physiological measurements, such as VO2max, anthropometric measurements, as well as prescribe aerobic and resistance exercises based on current clinical guidelines.
  • Perform recruitment of clinical service participants for research studies, and scheduling for study visits.
  • Maintain clinical documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures, data records, equipment maintenance.
  • Assess and validate new assessment methods before implementing into clinical practice and research.
  • Train new staff and students on Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Mentor and identify training needs for junior staff.
  • Comply with clinical inventory management procedures.
  • Comply with good clinical practice.
  • Coordinate with team to help ensure that clinical research and related activities are performed in accordance with national regulations, university/institute and sponsoring agency\'s policies and procedures.
Qualifications

The applicant should have: * Bachelor\'s degree in exercise science and/or allied health with a strong interest in implementing exercise testing and prescription for adults.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of relevant clinical experience is preferred.
  • Understanding of or experience with human clinical studies and or observational longitudinal studies
  • Experience in routine clinical assessments in research studies is advantageous.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to undertake a range of tasks concurrently.
  • High level of verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey complex information in easily understood format for a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to speak a second local language would be an advantage as you may need to interact with patients who only speak their mother tongue.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team linking different fields (e.g. exercise sciences, geroscience, nutrition).
