The SMU Urban Institute is a university-level research institute dedicated to advancing an interdisciplinary research agenda. Leveraging SMU's strategic position as a dynamic management university in Singapore's city centre, the Institute aims to make a meaningful impact through the study of Asian cities. We are currently seeking individuals with specific skillsets to support the various ongoing projects at the Institute.
The fellow will work closely with the PI and an interdisciplinary research team to support high-impact urban research and grant development. This is an exciting opportunity for a scholar with a strong foundation in urban and regional economics to contribute to empirical research, policy-relevant insights, and data-driven urban solutions.
Candidate's core responsibilities are:

• Lead the coordination and drafting of grant proposals under the supervision of the PI.
• Develop and maintain a data-sharing platform integrating large-scale administrative, demographic, spatial, and transportation datasets.
• Conduct literature reviews and establish a structured knowledge base to inform theoretical frameworks and empirical research designs.
• Perform data collection, compilation, maintenance, and analytics.
• Produce research publications and policy briefs.

Qualifications:

• Ph.D. degree in economics or finance.
• Previous research experience, especially in urban and regional economics, is highly preferred.
• Solid background in economics.
• Familiar with theories in urban and regional economics.
• Familiar with empirical work and identification strategies commonly adopted in economics.
• Proficiency in statistical toolbox, preferably Stata or R.
• Proficiency in numerical analysis in MATLAB or Python.
• Experience in working with large datasets.
