As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) for Medical Simulation Education, you will join a dynamic research team focused on advancing immersive technologies in the field of medical education. Your role will involve conducting innovative research, developing cutting-edge VR and AR applications, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to enhance medical simulation training and education. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of immersive solutions that can improve healthcare training and patient outcomes.

The research is jointly supervised by principal investigators from the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G), School of Medicine and Immersive Reality Lab, College of Design and Engineering at the National University of Singapore.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research Design and Execution: Conduct independent and collaborative research projects focused on utilizing VR and AR technologies for medical simulation education. Define research questions, design experimental protocols, collect and analyze data, and contribute to the academic and scientific community through publications and presentations.
  • Development of Medical Simulations for O&G students: Develop interactive and realistic VR and AR simulations to simulate medical scenarios, procedures, and patient interactions. Where appropriate, may incorporate haptic feedback to enhance the fidelity and effectiveness of medical training experiences.
  • Collaboration with Medical School Educators: Collaborate closely with medical professionals, educators, and subject matter experts to translate training requirements into immersive simulations that address specific learning objectives.
  • User Experience (UX) Design and Evaluation: Apply principles of UX design to create intuitive and user-friendly VR and AR interfaces for medical simulations. Conduct user studies and evaluations to assess the effectiveness, usability, and user satisfaction of the developed applications.
  • Mentoring and Teaching: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, or research assistants involved in medical simulation projects. Contribute to workshops, seminars, and training programs to share knowledge and expertise in the field of VR and AR for medical education.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering or a related field, with a focus on VR, AR, or related immersive technologies.
  • Strong programming skills and experience with relevant languages (e.g. C#, Unity) and VR/AR development frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of VR and AR concepts, technologies, and applications, particularly in the context of medical simulation and education.
  • Experience in conducting independent research and a proven track record of publications in reputable conferences or journals in the field of VR/AR and medical education.
  • Knowledge of user-centered design principles and experience with UX/UI design for immersive applications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work on complex research projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present research findings effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
