Research Fellow Position (Lidar Remote Sensing of Tropical Forests)

Conservation and restoration of carbon-rich Southeast Asian forests are of tremendous ecological and economical importance to ASEAN countries in the combat of climate change. Yet exact spatial distribution, health status and carbon stock of these forests remain poorly known. While a great many conventional satellite data sets have been used to estimate forest carbon stocks, most are not yet accurate enough to ensure the credibility and integrity of the marketplace for nature-based climate solutions. This 3-yr project funded by Singapore\'s Academic Research Council, Ministry of Education (MOE) aims to improve the measurement forest structure and aboveground biomass by linking these remote sensing observations to ground measurements of representative ecosystems in Southeast Asia.

Responsibility This position requires both experience with field ecology as well as strong quantitative analysis skills to explore multiple remote sensing data sets. It will involve the use of both satellite products and terrestrial lidar scanner. S/he will lead the collection, generation, and comparison of in-situ TLS data to satellite data over different types of ecosystems, including rainforests and mangroves. S/he will work closely with the PI to ensure the requirements of the project work plan are met. Key requirements include:

• Excellent programming techniques
• Strong quantitative data analysis
• Fieldwork experience, preferably in the tropics
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Prior experience in publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals

The position is available for up two years. Salary will be commensurate with experience, and it will be aligned with the NUS salary scale. An annual bonus, dependent on performance, is also potentially available, in-line with NUS policy.

Qualifications

• A PhD degree in Geography, Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry, Earth System Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
