Middle East Institute

The Middle East Institute (MEI), which was founded in 2007, is an autonomous research institute within the National University of Singapore (NUS). From its vantage point in Singapore, a crossroads of the world, MEI exists to advance understanding of the Middle East, and to deepen engagements between the Middle East and Asia. We do this through research, and aim to provide reasoned views to scholars, students, policymakers, businesses and the public through publications, lectures, consultations and outreach. We host speakers and visitors from and on the Middle East, and serve as a concourse for exchanging ideas and information on the Middle East in Singapore, Asia and the world.



The Institute\'s Research Fellows work under the supervision of the Director and the Senior Associate Director. You may therefore be asked to: * Participate in current cluster projects and be encouraged to lead a project

• Assist with organising workshops and conferences
• Participate in the Institute\'s outreach activities
• Contribute to academic research via peer-renewed journals, books, and chapters where requested

As a Research Fellow at our Institute, you will be asked to contribute regularly to our publications and other communications platforms. Some activities you can expect to undertake include: * Being actively involved in the activities of your chosen research cluster and those of the wider Institute Contributing at least three in-house publications

• Write detailed analyses of current events for our stakeholders
• Call for, and edit, papers offering in-depth analysis of a single subject, for quarterly publication
• Providing short commentaries to our social media platforms
• Where appropriate, accepting requests for commentary from local and international media
• Participating in our outreach activities

Qualifications

• You must have fulfilled all requirements of securing a PhD from a reputable university.
• You may apply even if you are still a PhD candidate. If you are successful, your graduation must be confirmed by the time you join the Institute\'s staff. (You will require an official letter from the Registrar\'s Office of your university confirming that you will be awarded your PhD degree).
• Knowledge of at least one Middle Eastern language is an advantage.

More Information

Terms of Appointment * Appointments will be made on a two year contract basis in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

• You will be paid a fixed monthly salary. This is an all-inclusive sum of stipends for housing and living expenses.
• You will receive a one-time travel assistance payment.
• Housing is NOT PROVIDED. You are expected to make your own private arrangements.
• All salary and benefits-in-kind are subject to tax as required by Singapore\'s tax laws.
• You will be eligible for support for research fieldwork and conference attendance.
