Senior Research Fellow In Energy Studies Institute (energy Economics)

Singapore, Singapore

Job Description

Energy Studies Institute

The Energy Studies Institute (ESI) is a research institute at the National University of Singapore seeking to advance the understanding of energy policy issues by conducting independent research and analysis.

The Energy Economics Division within ESI is looking to recruit an economist at the rank of Senior Research Fellow. The appointed staff will operate under the responsibility of the Division Head and work closely with all members of the Energy Economics Division.

Candidates are expected to be highly familiar with economics, and have had formal training in pure economics, energy economics, environmental economics or a closely related area. An important component of that expertise would include advanced econometric skills. Experience analysing electricity markets and energy commodity markets and evaluating impacts of energy and climate change policies would be preferable. An understanding of Singapore\'s economic system, and local work experience is desirable.

This will initially be a two-year position, with the possibility for renewal subject to satisfactory performance and finance.

  • As a Senior Research Fellow you will be expected to lead in the development of project proposals as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator (Co-I). Primarily for submission to local government agencies.
  • To take a lead role in the development of project reports as PI or Co-I, but also to be willing to contribute expertise to projects managed by other research staff within the institute.
  • To demonstrate thought leadership by developing and maintain an international reputation as an expert in your field. This will include participating in international conferences, publishing research in well-ranked and peer-reviewed journals, and developing/maintaining a robust citation profile.
  • A modest proportion of time will be set aside for self-guided research to support personal development.
  • The specific area of work will depend on the priorities of the institute at any given point in time. In the near term, to support ongoing and expanding future research within the institute, the appointed candidate will be expected to take a lead role in the electricity market and/or carbon pricing analysis.
Examples of areas where these might be applied include for example:
  • Carbon pricing and climate finance;
  • Transition pathways analysis;
  • Electricity (power generation) market analysis;
  • Energy efficiency analysis;
  • Techno-economic pathway analysis for emerging technologies (e.g., hydrogen, CCUS, electric vehicles).
  • Evaluation of energy storage system configurations.
  • Support in conducting life-cycle analyse
  • The above list is not exhaustive, moreover, at any given point in time the institute undertakes multiple projects in parallel and opportunities will exist to participate in a variety of workstreams that align with your interests.
Requirements
  • Possess a PhD Degree in the field of economics or a closely related area.
  • This may fall under any branch of economics, though given the nature of work within ESI and the position we require to fill, applicants with an empirical focus are preferred.
  • At least 7 years of experience in economics or a closely related field.
  • Applicants should have demonstrated analytical ability e.g. experience with econometric modelling or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience in cost benefit and/or techno-economic assessment and its application is desirable.
  • An interest and desire to deepen your understanding of the economics of energy systems, climate change and related market and policy issues.
  • Relevant working and practical experience in industry or government agencies in the area of energy and environment would be highly valuable.
  • Ideally this is within Singapore, or the South East Asia region, given the importance of these regions to work undertaken within ESI.
  • Applicants with no regional work experience will still be given full consideration.
  • Relevant research experience on the ASEAN region would be an advantage.
  • The appointed individual must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Published in reputable economics journals.
  • Evidence of a robust or emerging citation profile is highly desirable.
  • Evidence of previous project leadership is a strong advantage.
Application Process

To apply for this position, please combine the following documents in one PDF and attach it under the CV column when submitting your application:
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • A cover letter of no more than 800 words explaining the applicant\'s past research experience and aptitude concerning the research project.
Interested candidates, please submit your application with all the required documents. Only shortlisted applicants will be notified.
