The Scientific Officer (Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist) must excel as a specialist in a field with the necessary knowledge and skills as well as good working knowledge in the general field of all grades below them. The Scientific Officer must possess the necessary teaching skills to bring other members of the laboratory up-to-speed in understanding laboratory test methods.

The Scientific Officer must promote learning and sharing within the Laboratory and drive research and education.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(A) SPECIFIC (85%)

• Perform various aspects of methodological research such as writing proposals and evaluations of procedures, techniques and instrumentation.
• Tend to doctor queries regarding test performance and diagnostic capabilities.
• Oversee the instruction and curriculum of undergraduates attached to the laboratory.
• Perform specialised tests, and evaluate new tests and new analysers.
• Troubleshoot variances in performance of test methods.
• Perform laboratory investigations on survey program samples.
• May provide oversight to a laboratory section - including Quality Assurance, Quality Improvement.
• Work with the Principal Scientific Officer to drive the growth of the department.
• Assist the Laboratory Manager and Assistant Laboratory Manager in the procurement and/or development of training material.
• Participate in training and development of laboratory personnel and other hospital personnel as required.
• Assist the Laboratory Manager and Assistant Laboratory Manager to ensure all sections are prepared for accreditation inspection.
• Prepare abstracts and scientific papers of studies and evaluations performed by the laboratory.
• Organise Laboratory Medicine Workshops to promote the learning and sharing of the Department of Laboratory Medicine.
• Conduct periodic competency assessment of staff.
• Perform special projects as requested.
• Assist Laboratory Manager and Assistant Laboratory Manager to ensure all sections meet all regulatory requirements.
• Any other duties as directed by the Laboratory Director, Laboratory Manager, Assistant Laboratory Manager and Principal Scientific Officer.

(B) GENERAL (15%)

• Assist Laboratory Manager and Assistant Laboratory Manager in promoting safety in the laboratory.
• Be involved in hospital activities including participation in Continuous Improvement Programme.
• Participate in community outreach programmes.
• JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE * MSc or BSc in Medical Technology or related discipline

• Minimum 5 years relevant experience including leadership positions
