What the role is:Energy security is an existential issue for Singapore. With the growing climate imperative, a global energy transition shifting to low-carbon fuels is underway. At the same time, geopolitical pressures are causing significant stresses in energy markets, leading to risks of supply disruptions and significant price volatility. The energy transition will be especially challenging for Singapore, given our scarce natural resources and limited renewable energy options. One of Singapore's biggest challenges over the next few decades is to secure a low-carbon energy supply that is reliable and cost-competitive. The future of Singapore's energy landscape depends on our ability to harness four switches - natural gas, solar, electricity imports, and low-carbon solutions such as hydrogen, ammonia, and carbon capture and storage.What you will be working on:MTI's Energy and Carbon cluster leads initiatives to reduce emissions and drives the transition to a low-carbon economy, while ensuring energy security and cost-competitiveness. Officers working in this cluster will develop energy and carbon markets, plan for infrastructure development, build Singapore's capabilities to harness low-carbon energy sources, and manage mission trajectories and carbon budgets. You will collaborate with various stakeholders to support sustainable economic transformation and green growth through strategic planning, policy analysis, as well as partnerships with industry and international stakeholders. The New Energies Division within the Energy and Carbon cluster takes the lead in: xe2x80xa2 Developing, implementing and monitoring various alternative energy sources for Singapore, including solar, hydrogen in its various forms, bioenergy, geothermal energy, as well as other promising low-carbon technologies. xe2x80xa2 Overseeing issues relating to energy Research & Development and the development of competitive and robust new energy industries in Singapore. Your responsibilities include one or more of the following workstreams: xe2x80xa2 Develop strategies and policies to support the implementation of the Singapore National Hydrogen Strategy (published in October 2022), with a focus on: o Development of commercial industry projects to develop hydrogen supply chains in Singapore o Long-term infrastructure and land planning o Competitive monitoring o Advancement of international collaboration to leverage like-minded partners' efforts to advance regional hydrogen supply chains and interoperable standards and regulations o Facilitate collaborations across key stakeholders, involving Government agencies, industry players, academia and international counterparts as appropriate xe2x80xa2 Develop and implement R&D strategies in areas that are critical to Singapore's energy interests and supports the development of Singapore enterprises xe2x80xa2 Engage with new energy and decarbonization-focused companies and funds to track, monitor and make relevant recommendations with regards to the latest developments in the climate technology realm xe2x80xa2 Develop and implement communications and engagement plans with regard to Singapore's alternative energy policies xe2x80xa2 Monitor developments in global energy landscape and analyse implications for domestic energy policies to enable these developmentsWhat we are looking for:We are looking for driven and capable individuals who possess a strong desire to contribute and directly enable Singapore's energy transition, thrive working in a fast-moving environment across organisational boundaries and geographies, have a strong interest in alternative energy technologies and policies, and are equipped with the following qualities and competencies: xe2x80xa2 At least 3 to 7 years of working experience (fresh graduates with exceptional acumen will be considered) xe2x80xa2 Experience in policy review and formulation xe2x80xa2 Strong analytical skills, with quantitative analytical skills and financial modelling as a strong advantage xe2x80xa2 Strong written and verbal communication skills, additional language competencies would be viewed favourably xe2x80xa2 Ability to pick up new content areas quickly, and assimilate knowledge from a wide variety of sources to provide policy recommendations xe2x80xa2 Comfortable working with a wide range of stakeholders, both within and beyond the public service, which requires strong interpersonal, organisational and communication skills xe2x80xa2 Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team xe2x80xa2 Be driven, meticulous and resourceful xe2x80xa2 Open to travel occasionally for official duties xe2x80xa2 Preferably with relevant experience in sustainability and energy-related fields, or engineering or science backgroundAbout Ministry of Trade and Industry:The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) seeks to transform Singapore into a leading global city of talent, enterprise and innovation.
