Role Summary
We are looking for a highly experienced Backend Developer to join a global financial technology team. The ideal candidate is strong in Java with hands-on experience in Kafka, and ideally Kotlin, capable of building scalable, robust backend systems within a hybrid working model. While not mandatory, full-stack capabilities (especially with React) are highly valued.
This role is based in Singapore and requires on-site presence 2-3 days a week, collaborating closely with local teams. You will also need to be flexible with time zones, as the department operates globally, with occasional work in EST hours expected.
Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain high-performance backend services using Java (and optionally Kotlin)
• Design, build, and scale event-driven architectures with Apache Kafka
• Integrate backend services with frontend applications (built in React)
• Collaborate with cross-functional global teams across multiple time zones
• Participate in technical discussions, design reviews, and architecture decisions
• Troubleshoot production issues and support existing systems as needed
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code
• Ensure application performance, uptime, and scale, maintaining high standards of code quality and thoughtful application design
• Adhere to security, compliance, and engineering standards

Requirements and Skills

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
• Minimum 8 years of experience in backend development
• Strong proficiency in Java development; exposure to Kotlin is a plus
• Proven experience with Apache Kafka for messaging/event streaming
• Familiarity with modern software development practices (CI/CD, Git, Agile/Scrum)
• Experience working in hybrid teams and distributed environments
• Strong understanding of REST APIs, microservices, and backend best practices
• Comfortable working in a global team and occasionally flexible with time zones

Preferred Skills

• Knowledge or experience in React (as frontend is React-based)
• Experience in the banking or financial services domain
• Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Understanding of containerization tools like Docker and Kubernetes
• Familiarity with monitoring/logging tools and performance tuning
• Bonus: Exposure to BaaS, headless CMS, Elixir, or AI/ML concepts

Work Arrangement

• Location: Singapore (Hybrid - 2-3 days/week in office)
• Working Hours: Primarily local time, with occasional flexibility required for EST time zone collaboration
