Main purpose of job:

This role is an exciting opportunity to join the British High Commission (BHC) in Singapore as Inward Investment Manager for the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).

The British High Commission\'s DBT team in Singapore works with British businesses to increase exports around the world and promotes investment opportunities in the UK for overseas businesses. It also brings together policy and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade and investment and to help businesses succeed.

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the DBT Singapore achieve its objectives of promoting UK opportunities and driving foreign direct investment (FDI) and capital investment into the UK. Your primary measure of success will be the value of investment projects that you attract into the UK.

This position is an integral part of a three person investment team within the DBT Singapore, reporting to the Head of Inward Investment and with line management responsibilities for an Investment Officer.

You will be part of a supportive and collaborative network in the BHC, working closely with regional DBT colleagues, the UK\'s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) colleagues, and economic development agencies from the devolved administrations of the UK including Invest Northern Ireland and Scottish Development International.

Roles and responsibilities/what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

1. Relationship Management:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with senior stakeholders and decision makers from Singaporean target companies, existing investors and multipliers. Use those relationships to develop a deep understanding of their business, international plans and priorities.
  • Develop a deep network of DBT\'s key stakeholders: sector specialists (e.g. from financial services, technology energy and infrastructure), economic development agencies from the devolved administrations of the UK, delivery partners, marketing and communication teams, and departments across the BHC and UK Government.
  • Maintain consistent recording of meetings, interactions and business intelligence on DBT\'s CRM system, and ensure follow-ups with companies are undertaken in a timely manner.
2. Strategy Development
  • Actively contribute to the annual strategy setting.
  • Horizon scan for new investment opportunities in emerging sectors.
  • Collaborate closely with key stakeholders to ensure alignment with the whole of UK Government approach to supporting the broader UK-Singapore agenda.
  • Develop tailored approaches to promote different aspects of investment and finding the most impactful way to deliver investment objectives.
3. Delivering Business Plan

Under the leadership of the Head of Investment:
  • Contribute to the delivery of capital investment projects into the UK.
  • Identify and deliver high value FDI projects from Singapore into the UK as well as encouraging the growth of Singaporean companies with an existing presence in the UK.
  • Develop, plan and deliver a campaign of focused activity and engagement for the financial year, encompassing meetings, seminars, and events, to articulate compelling investment opportunities.
  • Prepare meeting briefings for senior officials.
  • Present regular updates on investment activities and performance to the senior management in DBT Singapore and the BHC.
4. Learning and Development
  • Build-up knowledge and understanding of the UK\'s FDI sectors, policy messages, the UK capability, and UK/Singapore business environment, as well as the business models of Singaporean target companies, investor profiles, Singapore\'s growth sectors and government support.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

Essential on arrival:
  • Successful track record and experience in relationship management, lead generation and business development (including market research, analysis, account management and delivery).
  • Excellent networking, communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with stakeholders, commercial clients, and a wide and diverse BHC team.
  • Ability to work at pace, prioritise tasks and work independently to delivery high quality outcomes while meeting deadlines.
  • A proactive, agile and can-do approach.
  • Excellent organisational, IT and administrative skills.
  • Proven organisational, planning and presentation experience.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

Desirable:
  • Previous commercial experience with a strong customer focus (concern for quality and drive for continuous improvement in the service provided).
  • Broad understanding of large Singaporean corporates, venture capital, technology and financial services sectors.
  • Demonstrate ability to understand diverse business models and identify areas of potential strategic partnerships and growth.
  • Experience of working in an international environment.
  • Line management experience.

Other benefits and conditions of employment

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary of SGD 4,963 subject to experience per month and a generous annual wage supplement (as part of total guaranteed remuneration) of an additional 2 months\' salary paid out in December each year, Central Provident Fund (CPF) payment in lieu for non-Permanent Resident foreign nationals, 23-days annual leave entitlement and a health insurance plan. The basic salary is non-negotiable.

We have a generous leave offer including: 23 days annual leave, increasing to 25 after 5 years\' service, with the option to carry over up to 10 days into the subsequent leave year; 13 public holidays; generous maternity and paternity leave; and childcare leave. We encourage volunteerism and offer up to 3 days paid volunteer leave.

We offer medical insurance to support staff with the high costs of healthcare in Singapore and periodic reimbursement for the cost of eye tests and replacement eye wear.

The BHC has an active Learning & Development Committee which works hard to provide a comprehensive L&D offer. All new hires undertake a workplace induction and there are a number of mandatory e-learning courses that must be completed in order to pass probation.

Working Patterns:

Normal working hours are 37.5 per week: 8.30am to 5.00pm from Monday to Friday. BHC Singapore supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering, and is committed to staff maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

There may be a requirement for occasional and limited out of hours work around major events and visits.

Should the successful candidate require a permit to work in Singapore, the British High Commission will apply and sponsor the appropriate pass on their behalf.

In addition to the duties which this job normally entails, you may from time to time be required to undertake additional or other duties as necessary to meet the needs of the High Commission, including playing a part in the corporate life of the mission and supporting any crisis response.
