CORE COMPETENCIES AND CLINICAL DUTIES (70-80%)
1. Clinical Competencies and Duties
In physiotherapy services, the Physiotherapist should have the general clinical competencies below (though not
exclusive to this list) and had attained the specific area of competency for their specialty area. Depending on current
rotation, the Physiotherapist should also develop specific competencies in the management of patients in one of
these disciplines:

xc2xb7 Neurology/Neurosurgery
xc2xb7 Cardiopulmonary
xc2xb7 Chronic Disease Management
xc2xb7 Geriatrics
xc2xb7 Musculoskeletal
xc2xb7 Women's Health and Lymphoedema
xc2xb7 Pediatrics
xc2xb7 Others
He/she should be independent in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patient within defined scope of
practice. He/she should have an understanding of the limits of their expertise and seek guidance proactively when
appropriate.
The Physiotherapist should:
xc2xb7 Possess skills and knowledge expected at entry level
xc2xb7 Demonstrate reasonable clinical reasoning ability in identifying main problems/impairments
xc2xb7 Be able to develop hypotheses and differential diagnoses for common presentations
xc2xb7 Make clinical decisions informed by best practice and research evidence
xc2xb7 Able to develop patient-centered intervention and management plan
xc2xb7 Implement effective physiotherapy intervention strategies safely
xc2xb7 Document patient records accurately2. Administrative Competency and duties
In the course of provision of physiotherapy services, staff must develop skills and competency in self management,
and compliance to medicolegal and governance guidelines
xc2xb7 Be responsible for the caseload allocated and provide coverage as necessary
xc2xb7 Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical reports in continuity of care
xc2xb7 Be familiar with and adhere to basic tenets of JCI
xc2xb7 Adhere to established billing procedures
xc2xb7 Have basic IT skills and competency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint
xc2xb7 Be able to use and navigate hospital electronic medical records applications
xc2xb7 Maintain statistics on workload as needed by the Department and Hospital
xc2xb7 Coordinate processes and flow within teams which includes understanding each area's operations3. Demonstration of Teamwork and Professionalism
Physiotherapists are members of a multi-disciplinary team. Staff must demonstrate esprit de corps and
professionalism to ensure that the desired outcomes are attained
xc2xb7 Engage actively in patient and care-giver education
xc2xb7 Proactive cross-coverage of colleagues in team to even out workload (e.g. if own caseload cleared ahead of
time)
xc2xb7 Provide after hours and on-call therapist services as required
xc2xb7 Assist with care and maintenance of equipment, materials and resources in the Department/Hospital
xc2xb7 Attend department meetings, ward rounds and other professional meetings as required
xc2xb7 Liaise and maintain good working relations with other healthcare professionals within the hospital and with
external organizations
xc2xb7 Demonstrate/portray professional behaviour including respect for patient privacy, personal hygiene and to
be a role model to subordinates
xc2xb7 Adhere to policies and procedures of the Hospital and Department
xc2xb7 Be involved in department activities e.g. Fitness Challenge/Hospital activities when requiredOTHER DUTIES (20-30%)
1. Continuous Education
xc2xb7 Ensure that knowledge is up-to-date
xc2xb7 Take ownership of personal continuous professional development of skills and knowledge in physiotherapy,
which includes independent reading, and attending relevant courses and talks
xc2xb7 Contribute to continuous professional development of physiotherapy skills and knowledge in other
colleagues, which includes provision of inservices, and peer reviews/audits
xc2xb7 Assist with on-job-training of therapy assistants (TA)2. Supervisory Role
xc2xb7 Assist with supervision of TA
xc2xb7 Assist with appraisal of TA
xc2xb7 Assist to supervise personnel attached to the department as and when required
xc2xb7 Assist to supervise observers or students on clinical placements3. Quality Improvement
xc2xb7 Embrace continuous improvements as our way of life by improving and refining work performance on a daily
basis.
xc2xb7 Contribute actively to department's Kaizen or other service quality improvements projects and initiatives
xc2xb7 Report to Senior Physiotherapist/Manager, seeking advice and providing feedback on service delivery and
improvement4. Research Contribution
xc2xb7 Collect research data as required and assigned by Supervisor/Manager5. Others
xc2xb7 Perform other duties assigned by Supervisor/Manager
xc2xb7 Occasional contribution to team/departmental projects outside of office hours as determined by reporting
officer
xc2xb7 Adhere to the policies and procedures of the Hospital and Department
