Job Title: Staff Engineer, Systems Design - Platform Engineering
Location: Singapore R&D
Business Unit: Genetic Sciences Division - qPCR/dPCR or MA Platforms
How You'll Make an Impact
As a Staff Systems Engineer in our Platform R&D team, you will play an important role in developing next-generation genetic analysis instrumentation. This is a hands-on role where you will integrate hardware, software, assays, and algorithms into systems that provide accuracy, and reliability for customers worldwide! You will partner across fields -- from molecular biology to embedded systems -- to translate user and business needs into innovative system builds.
What You Will Do
System Definition and Architecture

  • Translate customer and product requirements into clear system-level specifications and performance targets.
  • Develop system models and architecture frameworks spanning hardware, software, optics, and assay integration.
  • Conduct system analyses, trade-off studies, and feasibility assessments to inform build decisions.
Build and Integration
  • Lead system integration efforts for prototype and production genetic analyzer instrumentation.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, software, and assay teams to ensure robust subsystem interactions and signal integrity.
  • Perform verification testing, root-cause analysis, and system performance optimization.
  • Apply modeling and data-driven techniques (e.g., simulation, DOE, FMEA, RCA or equivalent experience) to evaluate and mitigate risks.
Innovation and Execution
  • Develop and validate new methods and architectures to improve efficiency, precision, and reliability.
  • Support early-stage prototyping, technology down-selection, and system scalability analysis.
  • Drive adoption of systems engineering standard methodologies, including model-based approaches and quantitative verification.
Collaboration Across Functions
  • Work closely with Product Management, Manufacturing, Quality, and Service to ensure system builds meet functional, operational, and regulatory needs.
  • Bring technical expertise during build reviews, risk assessments, and design transfers to manufacturing.
How You'll Get Here
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, or Software) or Applied Physics with 10+ years of relevant industry experience; or
  • Master's/Ph.D. with 5-7 years of experience developing life science instrumentation or diagnostic systems.
Technical Expertise
  • Proven track record in completing system integration and verification for complex electro-mechanical or optical instruments.
  • Familiarity with thermal control, optics, detection systems, statistical methods, fluidics, and signal processing in PCR or similar analytical systems.
  • Strong background in systems engineering methods: requirements management, modeling, FMEA, DOE, risk analysis, and reliability engineering.
  • Skilled in tools such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python, SolidWorks, and simulation/modeling environments.
  • Experience working in regulated environments (ISO 13485, FDA QSR, CE-IVD) preferred.
Interpersonal & Leadership Attributes
  • Self-directed engineer with a balance of analytical depth and practical execution.
  • Effective communicator across fields; able to synthesize complex findings for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Thrives in multi-functional, global R&D environments; capable of influencing outcomes through technical credibility.
