The Chat Platform team achieves a high degree of autonomy and velocity by combining designers, test engineers, product managers, and software engineers collaborating together. Staff Engineers at Zendesk are expected to be hands-on technologists who could contribute to application development directly, lead the design and implementation of projects, and be involved in technical discussions both within and outside their teams. You should love finding simple solutions to complex problems, and care about not only the technical and algorithmic aspects of large systems but the way they enable other teams to do their jobs. You should have previous experience with web infrastructure, distributed systems, or component-oriented software engineering. What you'll be doing Design, code, and deliver production-grade software. Ensure scalability, performance, maintainability, and security of the technical platform in collaboration with ops teams. Identify areas of our product and infrastructure that need improvement and drive fixes to completion. Collaborate closely with the Product Manager, the Team Lead, the technical leaders and other stakeholders to provide technical insights and estimates on upcoming projects. Mentor and guide junior team members by reviewing their code submissions, code pairing, and being a sounding board. Constantly communicate with the team members in a transparent, respectful, constructive and professional way. Establish meaningful relationships across the global organization. Become a key contributor to better working practices across Zendesk. What you bring to the role Required: Your are enthusiastic about technology. You have 6+ years of software engineering experience, preferably in a SAAS environment. In-depth knowledge of Java or Scala programming language. Experience with developing event-driven microservices using technologies similar to Apache Kafka Working knowledge with one or more of the following data stores and systems: Redis, AWS Aurora, ElasticCache. You put the customer first and respect your dedication to deliver. You have a solid architectural understanding of highly concurrent and low latency systems and common tradeoffs with regard to performance, scalability and reliability. You are passionate in understanding complex systems, debugging problems, and pushing solutions to production. You have experienced collaborating efficiently within a team to make mature and pragmatic decisions when solving technical problems. You have good interpersonal skills: you can optimally express your point of view to others. As importantly, you can actively listen to others and ensure fruitful discussions.
