Responsibilities


A piping supervisor's day-to-day duties combine technical expertise with strong leadership and project management skills. Key responsibilities include:

On-site supervision:

Managing and coordinating the daily activities of pipefitters, welders, and other installation teams.

Safety enforcement:

Conducting regular safety meetings and inspections, including toolbox talks, to enforce all health, safety, and environment (HSE) protocols.

Quality control:

Inspecting all work to ensure it meets technical specifications, codes, and industry standards.

Planning and scheduling:

Preparing work plans, allocating manpower, equipment, and materials to ensure tasks are completed on time and within budget.

Drawing interpretation:

Reviewing and interpreting technical documents, such as piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and isometric drawings, and providing guidance to the crew.

Coordination and communication:

Liaising with project managers, other supervisors (e.g., civil and electrical), and clients to resolve issues and ensure seamless project execution.

Reporting and documentation:

Preparing and submitting daily progress reports, managing "as-built" sketches, and overseeing documentation for quality assurance.

Testing and commissioning:

Supporting and overseeing the preparation and execution of system tests, such as hydrostatic and pneumatic tests.

Problem-solving:

Addressing on-site issues, technical discrepancies, and project variations as they arise.

Experience:

Most positions require at least 5 years of experience in piping installation and maintenance, with a track record in a supervisory role. Experience in the specific industry, such as oil and gas or shipbuilding, is often necessary.

Technical knowledge:

Strong understanding of piping systems, materials, and fabrication and welding techniques. Proficiency in reading engineering drawings and familiarity with international piping codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API) are also essential.

Leadership skills:

The ability to effectively lead, motivate, and manage a team to achieve project goals.

Communication skills:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are needed to coordinate with teams, report to management, and resolve conflicts.

Problem-solving:

The capacity to quickly identify and troubleshoot issues to minimize delays. *
