Job Purpose

This position to provides 365 days per year high quality veterinary care and support to NUS research and teaching community that utilizes animals. The primary responsibilities for this position are to ensure the delivery of professional veterinary expertise for all animal models utilized in biomedical research, simultaneous oversight of humane animal care and use, and compliance.

This position provides veterinary oversight for all animals and services covered under the NUS animal care and use program, including all CM animal facilities, NUS approved satellite facilities and procedure rooms where animal care and use (research/ teaching/ training) activities are conducted. In addition, the position performs duties related to serving on the NUS Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. The clinical responsibilities include rotations for weekend coverage (emergency and workshop), after hours (emergency, workshop, procedures/ monitoring service), and holidays (emergency).

The services and support provided by to this position is for NUS staff, students and faculties, covered under NUS \xe2\x80\x9ccampus wide\xe2\x80\x9d animal care and use program (involving multiple schools and departments).

Duties & Reponsibilities

1. Preventive, clinical, and emergency medicine: Provides for all species cared/ housed and used (in research/ teaching/ training) in all Comparative Medicine (CM) animal facilities, NUS satellite facilities and procedure rooms where animal care and use activities are conducted.

2. Surgical services: Conducts surgery as part of veterinary care, provides veterinary support (pre-, peri-, and post-operative), and conducts a variety of experimental surgeries for researchers as needed

3. Other veterinary services: Provides support for veterinary care and service on a large variety experimental procedures for researchers, such as (but not limited to) substance administration, sample collection, monitoring, anaesthesia (preparation, monitoring, and post-surgical care); pain management, etc.; including new techniques and refinement of techniques. This includes NUH workshops - conducted on both weekdays and weekends.

4. Diagnostic service: including imaging, clinical pathology, and necropsy (pathology).

5. Health monitoring program: Conducts routine clinical rounds, rodent sentinel and colony monitoring, routine health monitoring for all other applicable species, review/ approval/ testing of biological materials to be used in the facility

6. Animal procurement: Reviews and approves animal procurement, import, export and quarantine. Ensures all animals are acquired lawfully, meet health, transport, and other requirements by the facility, local authority and international regulations (when applicable).

7. Teaching and training: Provides training for researchers and CM staff, including classes and hands-on as required by local regulations (NACLAR Guidelines).

8. Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) duties: Reviews protocols submitted by researchers and provides recommendations to enhance animal models, study design, and animal related procedures.

9. Compliance: Takes part in post approval monitoring, conducts inspections as part of the IACUC regular inspection, and ensures compliance with applicable regulations (Animal and Veterinary Services/ AVS, Ministry of Health/ MOH), and accreditation (AAALAC-International);

10. SOP/ Guidelines/ Policy: Identifies the need, to review, to develop, and serve as subject matter experts in the development/ review of SOP/ Guidelines/ Policy for CM and IACUC.

Species covered by CM Veterinarian per 2020: rodents- mice, rats, guinea pigs; rabbits, non-human primates; pigs - large and mini; 3 species of fish; and amphibians - 2 species of frogs)

Special Work Schedule Requirements: On-call coverage and duties for after hours, weekends and holidays will be required on a rotational basis to cover 24/ 7 emergency and 365 days per year

Requirements

Required Qualification and experience:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicne (or equivalent)
- Minimum 2 years experience in veterinary clinical practice of medicine and surgery, or in the field of laboratory animal medicine
- AVS (The Animal and Veterinary Service, NParks, Singapore) licensed, or eligible to be licensed

Knowledge and Skill:
- Must possess effective interpersonal skills with good written, verbal, and
organizational skills.
- Demonstrate an ability to train, motivate, and supervise both
laboratory animal technicians, as well as research staff
- Good knowledge of the Singapore NACLAR guidelines, PHS policy, Guide to the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and other applicable regulations and guidelines governing laboratory animal care and use

Preferred Qualifications and experience:
- Completion of a residency in Laboratory Animal Medicine is an asset
- Board Certified in Laboratory Animal Medicine in an asset
- Other preferred qualifications include but not limited to experience in pathology, large animal models of medicine, and surgery (particularly swine, rabbit, and/ or nonhuman primates models), and/ or imaging;
- Experience working in the animal care and use program in research/ teaching/ training

Other:
- Ideally candidate should be proficient in the use of computer software application such as Microsoft Word, Excel and various database system.
- Fluent verbal and written communication skill in English
