About the Role
The role will be part of the Foreign desk leadership team at The Straits Times shaping its regional and international coverage. You will work closely with a team of Singapore-based editors and a network of almost 30 correspondents in bureaus across Asia-Pacific, Europe and America to make sense of fast-moving developments in areas from global trade to domestic politics, and to tell those stories with a distinctive voice and in different forms for our readers in the region. This position has a particular focus on Southeast Asia.
Successful candidates will:
Guide foreign correspondents in identifying and producing original stories that offer an accurate picture of how the people in Southeast Asia's diverse countries live, work and play, as well as the mega-trends sweeping through the region
Help foreign correspondents sensemake and connect the dots between what is happening in their respective patches and other parts of the world
Conceptualise and edit exclusive news reports, features and multimedia content
Plan ahead and come up with creative ways of covering major news events and developments
Coordinate with other teams in the newsroom to put together integrated multimedia and longform projects
Mentor younger editors on the desk
Who we are looking for
You should have:
At least 12 years of experience in journalism and related fields. Field experience as a correspondent in a Southeast Asia country is a distinct advantage
Well-honed news sense and the ability to make quick, sound editorial decisions
Strong leadership skills
Demonstrable ability to edit raw copy into compelling stories
Keen interest and thorough knowledge of the international news agenda
Take on board complex topics and make them accessible to general-interest readers
