Job Description

The Chess Instructor shall be responsible for designing, planning, and conducting structured Chess training sessions that are developmentally appropriate for the students under their charge. The instructor will work in close partnership with the teacher-in-charge to nurture students' skills, character, and love for the game.


Key responsibilities include:


Programme Planning & Delivery


Develop and implement a progressive Chess training programme in consultation with the school's teacher-in-charge.


Conduct weekly training sessions that include openings, middle game tactics, endgame strategies, and competitive play.


Adapt coaching strategies to suit different ability levels (beginners, intermediate, advanced).


Provide students with opportunities for analytical thinking, problem-solving, and sportsmanship through gameplay.

Competition Preparation


Train and prepare students for internal and external competitions such as the

National Inter-School Team Chess Championships

and other relevant tournaments.


Organise friendly matches and intra-school competitions to build competitive experience.

Student Development & Values Education


Instil good values such as discipline, patience, integrity, and respect during training.


Encourage teamwork, resilience, and ethical conduct in all competitive settings.


Provide mentorship and foster a positive learning environment that aligns with school values and MOE's 21st-Century Competencies framework.

Assessment & Feedback


Assess students' progress regularly and provide constructive feedback.


Work collaboratively with the teacher-in-charge to evaluate student growth in both skill and character.


Submit attendance records, progress reports, and other required documentation punctually.

Professional Conduct


Be punctual, responsible, and professional in all interactions with students, staff, and parents.


Ensure that all teaching materials and activities are age-appropriate and comply with school and MOE safety guidelines.


Report any incidents, disciplinary issues, or concerns promptly to the teacher-in-charge.

Job Requirements



Minimum

3 years of relevant coaching experience

in Chess training for children or youth. Possess a

recognised Chess Federation certification

(e.g. FIDE Instructor, National Instructor, or equivalent) preferred. Strong understanding of Chess theory, tactics, and tournament formats. Demonstrated ability to teach and inspire students with varying levels of skill. Good communication and classroom management skills. Ability to work collaboratively with school staff and align lessons with educational goals and values. Must be responsible, reliable, and passionate about nurturing young minds through Chess.

Additional Notes



The instructor may be required to adjust training schedules during school holidays or competition periods. The instructor must ensure that all learning resources and activities respect intellectual property rights. * Candidates with experience coaching in school environments or leading competition teams will have an advantage.
