Job Description


What the role is:

Established in 1958, the Syariah Court has been a key institution for the Muslim community in Singapore. The mission of SYC is to i) save and salvage marriages, ii) settle divorces amicably, and iii) deliver just outcomes. When a marriage ends, the Syariah Court strives to ensure that the family relationship is preserved especially between parents and children, and the children are protected from the negative impact of the divorce. The Syariah Court works closely with the legal, religious and social service sectors in achieving these aims. The Syariah Court has recently implemented a Court Counselling Framework to achieve more sustainable outcomes on care arrangements for children affected by their parents\' divorce. This is being done through the setup of counselling services to mitigate impact of divorce on children as well as to enable the Court to make more informed decisions in respect of children\'s care arrangements post-divorce. The functions of the CCF are to provide the following: 1. Clinical services: a. Counselling services for families on divorce and child-custody related issues; b. Children\'s interviews and brief assessment reports to Court; 2. Work in close partnership with partner agencies in case management and service delivery 3. Monitoring statistics and trend analysis, initiating research and evaluation projects with the aim of developing and implementing appropriate policies and programmes within the Syariah Court and larger family justice system

What you will be working on:

The successful candidate will be assigned a range of activities relating to the above services, including the following: 1. Provision of clinical services, depending on the needs of the particular family or children at the various stages in the divorce court proceedings; 2. Preparation of reports to Court; 3. Liaison and consultation on case management with presiding officers, legal representatives, partner agencies; 4. Maintenance of proper case documentation and statistics; 5. Participation in planning and evaluation of new services/projects; support practice research and evaluation efforts; 6. Administrative and related duties; and 7. Participation in on-going professional supervision and professional development programmes

What we are looking for:

  • Minimum 5 years of graduate work experience with couples, families, children. Experience in areas of custody evaluations, forensic assessments, and conciliation in the area of divorce will be advantageous. \xe2\x80\xa2 Experience in project management and research will be an asset. \xe2\x80\xa2 Proficiency in spoken and written English. Proficiency in spoken Malay will be an asset. \xe2\x80\xa2 Effective interpersonal skills and an ability to demonstrate strong analytic thinking through oral presentation and written reports. \xe2\x80\xa2 A good team player who possesses research and statistical skills, report writing and effective interpersonal skills.
