Teacher-in-Charge of Debate CCA / HOD (English / Humanities) / Subject Head (Oracy or Language Arts)
Purpose of Role:
To design, facilitate, and implement a developmentally appropriate debate training programme that builds students' confidence, critical thinking, public speaking, and argumentation skills in alignment with the school's vision, mission, and values, and MOE's 21st Century Competencies Framework.
Key Responsibilities

1. Programme Design & Delivery
Plan and conduct weekly debate training sessions that are age-appropriate, progressive, and aligned with national competitions (e.g., Wits & Words , MOE Debate Championships , SDC Junior Debate , NSL, etc.)
Incorporate theory (argumentation, rebuttal, case-building) and practical application (mock debates, adjudication practice, motion analysis).
Use interactive pedagogical methods--experiential learning, Socratic questioning, and team-based learning.
2. Student Development
Build students' oracy, reasoning, collaboration, and persuasive communication skills.
Mentor students in self-reflection, preparation, and constructive feedback.
Develop critical and inventive thinkers who articulate perspectives confidently and respectfully.
3. Competition Preparation
Select and train students for intra-school and inter-school debate competitions.
Develop motion briefs, case files, research materials, and run scrimmages to simulate tournament settings.
Accompany and guide students during competitions, ensuring sportsmanship and discipline.
4. Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with the teacher-in-charge to co-plan termly focus areas, evaluation rubrics, and competition readiness.
Attend coordination meetings, school events, and debriefs as required.
Provide regular updates on student progress and attendance.
5. Administration & Safety
Submit termly training plans and post-programme reports for school evaluation.
Ensure the physical and emotional safety of students during all sessions.
Prepare contingency plans for e-CCA (online) delivery where necessary.
Job Requirements

Qualifications
Minimum Diploma or Degree in English, Communication, Humanities, or related field.
MOE-registered Instructor (CCA Coach/Instructor Registration preferred).
Experience
At least 2 years of experience coaching or adjudicating in school debate programmes or national debate competitions.
Proven track record in preparing students for competitive debate events (e.g., Wits & Words, NSL, SDC, etc.).
Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of debate formats (World Schools, British Parliamentary, Policy, etc.) and adjudication criteria.
Excellent command of English (spoken and written).
Skilled in scaffolding argumentation, research, and oracy skills.
Strong classroom management and motivational skills.
Ability to differentiate instruction for varying ability levels.
Models core school values (e.g., respect, responsibility, resilience).
Other Requirements
Must be able to commit to the school's CCA schedule (typically 1-2 sessions per week).
