Director, East Asian Institute

Singapore, Singapore

Job Description

Background

The East Asian Institute (EAI) is an autonomous research organization within the National University of Singapore.

The mission of EAI is to promote academic and policy-oriented research on East Asian development, particularly its political, economic and social development. While the Institute's initial focus was on contemporary China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan), it has extended its research efforts to Japan and Korea as it builds up its resources. EAI has recently opened a Korea Centre to focus on developments on the Korean Peninsula.

The long-term vision of EAI is to become the region's foremost research institution on East Asian development by examining the interplay of political, economics, and social development of these countries with ASEAN and the world-at-large.

To promote academic exchange and to enable its research findings to reach out to a wider segment of the public, EAI organizes seminars, publishes research papers, gives background briefings, and provides commentaries on a regular basis. EAI also participates in joint research projects with government ministries and statutory boards in Singapore, promotes collaborative programmes with similar institutions in the region as well as organizes regional and international conferences and workshops on East Asian issues.

The Institute enjoys close links with the broader ecosystem of NUS - a leading global university fostering excellence across a comprehensive spectrum of disciplines and seamless opportunity for cross-disciplinary enrichment.

Please refer to the Institute's website for more details: .

NUS seeks to hire an outstanding scholar or practitioner in any area of the humanities and social sciences for appointment as director of EAI, starting June 2023, for an initial term of three years.

The director is appointed by the Deputy President (Research and Technology) and will work in consultation with the Institute's advisory and management boards to:

  • Develop new areas of research excellence spanning the various faculties and schools in NUS
  • Develop innovative processes and sound policies to make the Institute the hallmark of excellence
  • Foster strong collaborative relations with other departments in the broader ecosystem.
Qualifications

The director should preferably be a PhD holder who is an internationally-recognized leader in his or her academic field. The director also needs to have familiarity and experience with regard to China's and the region's initiatives, and preferably be well networked with the academic and policy-making communities in China and the East Asian region. The appointment of director is a full-time position with generous support for work which advances the mission of the Institute.

NUS is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in its community; the successful candidate must embrace these values.
