Energy Storage Development Internships 2023 Singapore

Singapore, Singapore

Job Description

Dyson is a global technology enterprise. We solve the problems others choose to ignore, with surprising new inventions that defy convention and simply work better. We\'re driven by progress and thrive on the challenge of relentless improvement. We\'re growing fast and our ambition is huge - more categories, more locations and more people.

We push the boundaries of what others have defined as possible. Our engineering approach starts with different thinking. Then we continuously refine our ideas - unwilling to compromise and driven by an obsession for finding a better way. Today we employ more than 5,800 people around the world in software engineering, mechanical engineering and science-related roles.

Our Energy Storage team are responsible for new battery technology that will deliver significantly better performance than conventional battery cells.

We are looking for penultimate year students, graduating by August 2024 and who would be able to commit full-time from July/August 2023 (minimum 12 weeks).

About the role

Being a pivotal role in the concept to production of a Dyson Designed Cell puts the Development team at the heart of this exciting journey. The team will translate early concept directions into fully developed, optimised & validated solutions to make at high volume for the next generation of Dyson products.

Whether you join us for an Industrial Attachment programme or a 3-month summer internship, you\'ll be assigned to a live project team putting your university learning into practice from the get-go. Depending on your skillset you could be joining one of the following teams:

Characterisation

Investigate our own Lithium Ion Batteries\' (LIBs\') lifetime, so that we know how long they last: Characterization of Dyson Batteries - Shelf-Life Project

Understand how our LIB manufacturing process work, so that we can make it better (optimization and sustainability) and produce great LIBs (high product yield): Online In-Situ Data Collection and Characterization

Cell Application

Cell specification definition based on bottom-up: cell technology R&D and top-down: pack/product aspiration

Development cell prototyping integrating electrochemical, process, mechanical concepts/technologies

Cell verification and validation to give cell test feedback to teams and ensure our final design meets cell specification

Electrochemical

Understand basic electrochemistry and how to interpret the result in theory. This work covers the logic development by problem defining - hypothesis setting - DoE building - result analysis and utilization of the logic into threshold-overcome solution.

Mechanical Design

Develop 3D design of the cell components and ensure the geometric, thermomechanical, electrochemical and process requirements are translated to 2D drawings

Use design risk analysis tools such as dFMEA and Fault Tree Analysis to identify, assess, score and mitigate risk via geometric modifications and the setting of performance requirements

Assess whether the parts meet their specification by developing and implementing test methods to verify & validate the design for performance, safety and reliability

Use tolerance analysis methods and evaluate the risks via build capability measurements to produce high yield, low cost solutions

Process Development

Development of novel Cell technology comes with new and highly challenging manufacturing processes. This role encompasses all the processes required to progress technology established in research through to scaled manufacture

Be the driver of novel process design ensuring the technical requirements are met for Form, Fit & Function form a process perspective - construct design requirements and develop to resolution to ensure a smooth transition to equipment & production teams

Contribute to the development and optimisation of innovative new technologies that can be incorporated into the manufacturing processes to give a performance, cost or environmental advantage

About you

Our internships are competitive and delivering the next generation of Dyson technology is tough, so you\'ll need to be:

Be studying towards an Engineering or Science degree

Graduating in August/September 2024

Able to evidence how you have applied your technical knowledge to solve problems, either through your university projects or as part of your co-curricular activities

Strong organisational skills with a methodical and detailed approach.

A quick learner and an effective communicator - to be able to thrive in Dyson\'s fast-paced environment

Apart from the technical know-how, you will need to be an inquisitive self-starter who is passionate about learning and creative in problem solving. With a combination of hands-on experience and dedicated training, we will support you with a development framework designed to help you make the most of your internship.

Please upload your detailed resume and latest academic transcript (all semesters inclusive) in a single file together with your online application.

Please note that you should only apply to one internship position as multiple applications will delay the selection process. We will consider you for another internship role should you have the relevant skillset or experience. Shortlisted candidates will undergo our early careers recruitment and selection process which could include digital assessments and interviews.

Lesson learned

James Dyson learnt a lesson in the value of legal might, winning a gruelling $4.2m battle against Hoover when it infringed our early cyclone technology patents. Protecting our technology has been a key element in development at Dyson ever since.
