Executive (faculty Engagement), Nus Museum

Singapore, Singapore

Job Description

The NUS Museum and Baba House are the only University Museums in Singapore. The NUS Museum\'s collections include Southeast Asian, Chinese, Indian materials including modern and contemporary art. The Baba House specialises in Straits Chinese materials. The strength of the Museum is in providing something no other museum in Singapore can: which is giving direct, first-hand access to its collections to students in teaching, research, and study.

The Faculty Engagement Unit is a sub-unit of the NUS Museum. It oversees the development and customization of museum content for module-based engagements, which is the key that has made the museum relevant to many more modules and expanded the number of engagements by the NUS community and other Institutions of Higher Learning. In view of the potential development of arts-based majors and minors, and interdisciplinary curriculum development at NUS College, there is a need to augment the capacity of the Faculty Engagement Unit.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Assistant Curator (Faculty Engagement), the Executive (Faculty Engagement) will facilitate module access to NUS Museum and Baba House\'s exhibitions and collections, for in-gallery teaching sessions.

  • To act as a liaison between the NUS Museum and faculty within NUS and other Institutions of Higher Learning to encourage the use of collections and exhibitions in teaching and learning.
  • To work with university faculty to design, conceptualize and implement museum-based, object-centered programmes for various module-based engagements (including tours, co-develop assignments, advising on student projects, object study and collections access) to promote engagement with module curriculum and scholarship.
  • To work with the museum\'s Collections Officers to compile, coordinate, and facilitate object viewing requests for teaching and research access to the museum\'s collections. The candidate may also be required to provide basic object handling during course sessions (training will be provided).
  • To facilitate faculty-initiated academic programmes, publications, conferences, workshops, and seminars
  • To support the Faculty and Community Engagement team in planning and executing events, assisting with education initiatives and Museum outreach programmes
Requirements
  • BA or MA in a Humanities-related field (Art History, History, Southeast Asian Studies, Museum Studies, Cultural Studies or equivalent). An ability to demonstrate familiarity with interdisciplinary research methods and an interdisciplinary-based educational model will be advantageous.
  • Proficient in engaging with scholarship and conducting academic-based research, while reflexive in making such content accessible to a wide range of adult audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrate capacity to engage professionally with various stakeholders verbally and in writing.
  • Prepared to apply public speaking skills to engage with the museum\'s audiences.
  • Fluency in a second language may be advantageous.
  • Attention to detail, and careful with implements and surroundings.
  • Excellent organizational skills, tenacity and resilience required to work in a fast-paced environment and ability to manage multiple projects at once.
  • Open to working on weekday evenings and weekends when required to support module engagement activities and museum programmes.
