About the Role -


Reporting into the Chief Commercial Officer, the Head of Credit & Market Risk is a member of the Commercial Leadership Team with global accountability for the governance and management of commodity price risk and commercial counterparty risk for BHP and its portfolio of traded commodities. Leveraging extensive technical financial risk management expertise across commodities, they leverage quantitative and qualitative expertise to support the Commercial function, senior management and the Board to optimise value. This is achieved by leading a team of technical experts in credit risk, market (price) risk and structured financial solutions that influence risk and value outcomes across the commercial portfolio. Close internal and external relationships are key to your success in this role, and helping to shape the strategic decisions we take in our trading and procurement activities. This is a global search, with the role based in Singapore.

About You - Skills and Qualifications


You are a deep subject matter expert in the financial risk management of physical commodities, with demonstrated capacity to operate across a global credit and market risk mandate. You are an inclusive and inquisitive leader, whose teams achieve outstanding outcomes solving large, complex issues. In this role, you will cultivate trusting relationships through effective communication, active listening, and consultation, positively influencing teams across BHP, as well as external stakeholders. Requirements


Minimum requirements that this candidate will bring are:
  • Tertiary qualification in relevant fields, including: Finance, Economics, Risk, Engineering, or Science; MBA or advanced degree is preferred
  • Substantial global experience across regions/jurisdictions, with leadership roles in the financial risk management of physical commodities
  • Deep technical risk analytics skills (quantitative and qualitative) in credit and market risk, with demonstrated global leadership of large, complex risk portfolios and associated strategies, risk appetite, risk management frameworks and controls
  • High degree of agility to adapt risk appetite and underlying frameworks, systems and processes to enable Commercial strategies and respond to both long-term market evolution and short-term market impacts
  • Distinctive, demonstrated leadership and influencing skills to engage across a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Ability to lead change and develop the team to support continued world class performance and outcomes
  • Focus on achieving results, learning and adapting to solve problems
  • Judgement and decision making skills and an appreciation of strategic and business critical objectives
  • Experience building, managing, and sustaining strong relationships with cross-functional internal customers as well as building trusting partnerships with external partners and stakeholders
  • Proven experience shaping inclusive, diverse, dynamic, and highly-performing global teams; to manage this globalised team across 3 locations and time zones

Accountabilities


Accountabilities of this leader include, but are not limited to:
  • Globally accountable for the management of credit risk and market (price) risk for all Commercial activities, including definition of commercial risk appetite
  • Translates risk appetite into appropriate frameworks and controls for BHP’s trading and marketing activities and (in relation to counterparty risk) for BHP’s global procurement activities
  • Sets and implements policy in the areas of price risk, market risk and credit risk, ensuring adaptation to the changing risk environment and leveraging of technology to a world class level (including the design and operation of BHP commodity trading and risk management (CTRM) systems)
  • Assesses the risk implications of commodity market evolution and lead the evolution of risk and performance metrics across commodities in BHP’s key commodity markets (including iron ore, metallurgical coal, copper, nickel and bulk and containerized freight) and emerging markets (for example, carbon and biofuels)
  • Secretary to Marketing and Supply Risk Management committee (MSRM), accountable for setting agendas, generating portfolio reporting, authoring analytical risk papers to support MSRM decisions and managing approvals and other committee processes
  • Provides trusted strategic credit and market risk advice to the Chief Commercial Officer, Commercial teams and, where required, to the broader enterprise
  • Delivers innovative risk and/or structured financial solutions across Commercial to support margin realisation or mitigate risk in our commercial activities
  • Build relationships with senior leaders across Commercial and our external partners (banks and counterparties) to understand changes in market conditions, counterparty financial worthiness, and use risk insights to actively challenge strategies defined and undertaken
  • Advises stakeholders on the courses of action or alternative strategies to optimise value, and develops options for mitigating downside risk to a tolerable level
  • Provides an overriding commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and sustainable development including managing fatigue and mental wellbeing
