Job Description


Reporting to the Dean of Learning, Teaching and Research, the Head of Research Practice is responsible for fostering a research culture that advances high quality research initiatives and outputs. The Head will lead a research environment that encourages innovative and good practice in arts research across disciplines, facilitate the introduction of emerging new tools and models that enables the publication, dissemination, and evaluation of both traditional research and professional and creative activities.

Working with the academic community, you will facilitate and oversee the institutional Research Funding and Creative Index Schemes. The incumbent is required to facilitate mentorship of emerging researchers, lead the implementation of research projects, identify and secure external funding opportunities, where appropriate.

You are expected to be an active and recognised scholar in subject areas related to artistic practices and art related research and place a key leadership role in the College.

The incumbent should possess a deep understanding of practice-led research at a tertiary arts institution and its corresponding research methodologies, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to lead and inspire faculty, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Requirements:

  • Postgraduate qualification at PhD level, or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
  • At least 13 years and above or equivalent experience in practice-led tertiary arts education, with a focus on research development and supervision and mentoring of staff in their research, and at least eight years of track record of academic leadership in research.
  • Experience in developing, driving and implementing effective practice-led research initiatives and strategies, fostering innovation and transdisciplinary collaboration, and managing teams in tertiary arts education with a focus on ensuring high-quality services and support for students and staff.
  • Experience in designing innovative research environments, and connecting to the creative industries and academic research community.
  • Experience in conducting research in relevant areas of practice-based arts education, leading to publications, presentations, and other scholarly contributions.
  • Experience in managing budgets, resources, and other operational aspects of an academic unit.
  • Ability to combine and integrate the skills and expertise of staff into multi-disciplinary teams, developing and building upon existing collaborations as well as creating/facilitating new opportunities for interdisciplinarity.
  • Familiarity with international and intercultural perspectives on research and education, and experience in collaborating with international partners, staff and students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate ideas, build relationships and engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Literacy in digital technologies and relevant software and tools for art and design research and education. Ability to work collaboratively to identify and implement innovative solutions to challenges in practice-based arts research and education.
