Job Role
The Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials is looking for a laboratory staff to support the operational needs of shared facilities such as the furnace laboratory, gas storage and distribution and chilled water distribution system, and will work with the Directors, Facility Managers and researchers at the institute. The job scope will cover:
Gas storage, distribution and alarm system
Liaise with term contractors for alarm maintenance, servicing and fault reporting
Interact with day to day gas alarm and provide training to researchers
Manage gas inventory and notify procurement for timely ordering and stock piling
Oversee safety and installation of gas cylinders, including hazardous gases
Purge gas lines and connect cylinders to the designated manifolds
Support facility manager to plan for adding new types of gases and work with safety officer to ensure compliance to regulations
For high pressure vessels, arrange for periodic testing of pressure integrity and valve operations
Work with contractors on sourcing new gas cabinets, if required
Work with architects and contractors to extend existing gas pipe to the location of new equipment
Support the laboratory response team in addressing incidents that trigger the alarm systems
Furnace laboratory support
Day to day operations of maintaining gas lines to furnaces
In charge of leak tests (using leak detector) for existing and newly installed piping connections
Procure spare parts such as pipes, NPT/KF parts, safety valves, regulators, etc
Liaise with vendors and suppliers in providing onsite support for periodic maintenance of mass flow controllers, calibration of furnaces, scrubbers (exhaust purification system), pumps (dry scroll, diaphragm, etc), canopy hoods (heat extraction), HPF and BAF (gas exhaust fans) and connecting chilled water to furnace tubes
Responsible for decontamination duties of furnace tubes
Source and procure new furnace tubes
Chilled water distribution system (chillers)
Inspect laboratories weekly in finding leaks or faulty connections for the water supply, flow meters and pressure and temperature gauges
Oversee rectifications and replacements of faulty parts and meters
Physically inspect chillers and pumps to check for icing, rust, unusual noise, etc
Provide onsite support for quarterly maintenance with term contractors
Interface with users during maintenance/servicing schedule
Engage vendors and provide onsite support for connecting chilled water to compressors
Miscellaneous
Arrange term contractors for solving electrical, mechanical, aircon and infrastructure related problems
Respond actively to user complaints and be on standby for emergency situations
Should be expected to work overtime or on weekends during emergencies
Requirements
At least a Diploma/Bachelor of Science degree in sciences, engineering or their equivalent
Have at least three years\' working experience in operation, support and/or managerial roles in research labs or industry (preferably gas, chemical, semiconductor or aircon)
Good communication and social skills, with ability to communicate well with contractors and vendors of various nationalities
Familiarity with statutory safety regulations and basic understanding on operation of chillers would be a bonus
A good team player and keen to provide hands-on support for a wide range of activities
Proactive and able to anticipate and plan for laboratory needs and supplies
A strong sense of responsibility, professional integrity and diligence
