The Coal and Freight Trading desk oversees the trading of coal and freight. Within this desk, the Solid Fuels Logistics team plays a crucial role in ensuring the successful execution of physical supply contracts and acts as the primary point of contact for operational inquiries.

The specific responsibility of this role, within the Freight team of Solid Fuels Logistics, is to facilitate efficient communication among traders, internal support functions, and customers of the Freight Desk, including suppliers, ports, agents, and shipping companies. In addition, the role entails providing analytical support to the entire freight operations team.

Your day to day activities will generally include:

  • Coordinating the physical shipping program for long and short cargo and vessel positions.
  • Actively managing all voyages and life cycles associated, including but not limited to TCs, VCs, COAs, and RELETs.
  • Experienced at Charterparty Negotiations and execute the corresponding Time charters and Voyage charters
  • Liaising with vessel owners, charterers, ports, brokers, agents, and vessels on a daily basis for operational matters for the freight trading desk, serving as the key point of contact and managing those relationships.
  • Arranging in-port operations, including inspections, surveys, vessel agency, issuance of shipping documentation, and settlement of disbursements.
  • Reviewing, interpreting, and applying contract clauses to enhance statements of account.
  • Actively identifying and capitalizing on opportunities to optimize trading desk positions.
  • Working with the trading team to advise on fleet coverage, identify opportunities, and ensure optimal vessel selection for existing cargoes.
  • Supporting the bunker trader and all activities associated with bunker procurement.
  • Proactively solving problems and preventing potential detrimental situations.
  • Actively managing commercial and operational risks associated with dry bulk vessel chartering.
  • Delivering timely and accurate information to the trading desk and ensuring a comprehensive understanding and reconciliation of trading positions against physical activity.
  • Responsible for explaining and analyzing P&L moves for vessels and voyages.
  • Collaborating with internal functions, including risk control, back office, and legal and compliance, to ensure a timely flow of information for reporting, settlement, and the timely resolution of contractual and deal maintenance issues.
  • Mentoring, training, and upskilling junior operators
Your powerful skills
  • University degree (Bachelor or higher) in a related field
  • Prior knowledge required and previous experience in a commodities trading environment is essential (3 Years)
  • Experienced in charter party negotiations and executing corresponding time charters and voyage charters
  • Strong awareness of coal/shipping market terminology and practices is preferred
  • Experience working in a numerate area / good standard of numeracy (e.g. Good level of Maths +)
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, Excel in particular
  • Team spirit and intercultural competency, strong communication as well as time- and self-management skills to collaborate with various stakeholders and work in and with different (business, domain, regional) cultures
  • Confident manipulating numerical data and willingness to work in a demanding environment.
  • Excellent language skills in English
Advantageous, but not a must
  • Proficient in using Openlink Endur and/or Veson IMOS for trading operations
  • Experience creating and using Databases / Access
  • Proven track record in negotiating contracts
